Fresh roasted coffee beans are a centuries-old commodity in the United States. They first started coming into popularity in Pascagoula, Mississippi, in the 1830s as a way to get flavor from local rain forests. Today, fresh roasted coffee is an important part of the local economy and is also enjoyed by people all over the world. The first time fresh roasted coffee was sold in Pascagoula was during the 18th century. The name “Pascagoula” means “the place where coffee grows” in Spanish and refers to a swamp that used to be located near downtown Pascagoula. Coffee beans were brought overland from Mexico City until around 1800. In 1835, Jno. Strauss began selling ground coffee at his grocery store on John Street. At this time, fresh roast coffee was just starting to become popular and it wasn’t easy to find good quality beans anywhere else! Strauss quickly became known for his high-quality beans and continued to sell them until his death in 1872. His store remains one of the most significant landmarks in downtown Pascagoula today. During the late 19th century and early 20th century, several other entrepreneurs began buying and selling ground coffee throughout Jackson County including James Fenton who ran a millinery shop on State Street; Wm Henson who operated a sawmill on Broad River; Capt Aiken who owned an inn on Main Street; Geo Ransom who ran a blacksmith shop on Third Avenue; Amos Lowenthal whose grocery store had five floors; Ayscough & Lowenthal which operated two grocery stores before merging with Kroger Bros.; Ephraim Duhigg which built (and later sold) four homes between 1922-1927; Harry Sheppard who opened (and later closed) Sheppard’s restaurant on 9th Avenue NW between 1915-1920). These businessmen supplied many of Jackson County’s businesses with ground coffee for sale or consumption within their own businesses or through sales connections with other businesses across town or county lines! This period of Jackson Coffee history is often called “The Golden Age of Coffee” because this is when several major milestones occurred such as: The first commercially successful Starbucks opening up shop outside of Seattle – this happened around 1928 (!); Negroes being admitted into white universities – starting around 1920!!! This was due largely to Dr segregation laws beginning back then tadke prices went up accordingly……….. (see below) As well as numerous small shops becoming co-operative mills with women running everything from baking doughnuts all the way up until weaning calves off their mothers at night!) In fact there were so many small shops operating during this time that it sometimes difficult to keep track of them ALL! Some notable pioneers during this era include Mrs Lloyd Blankenship (1895-1986), Florence Welchman (1905-1989), Myrtle Bible Tharp (1912-)….. etc etc……….etc………………….. etc………………….etc

Today, Pascagoula is considered one of the most important coffee roasters in America, and their coffee is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
Pascagoula (pronounced "puh-SCHAH-guhl") is a city in Mississippi and the county seat of Jackson County. The population was 66,827 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Jackson County by population. Pascagoula is located on the Gulf of Mexico south of Mobile, Alabama. The city was first settled by people whoOriginally came from what is now Spain and Portugal. In 1797, Captain John Smith, an American explorer and naturalist, explored this area while searching for a Northwest Passage to Asia. He named the bay where Pascagoula now stands after his native country -Portugal Bay - because he found several Portuguese vessels stranded there during his exploration trip. The early Spanish settlers arrived here in 1810 and named it San Sebastian de la Gomera (Santo Sebastian Point). They established plantations near present-day downtown Pascagoula to produce cottonseed oil which they exported to Spain. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson's forces destroyed Spanish Fort at Pascagoula after a siege that lasted three months. The fort had been built onugarcane island within sight of Mobile Bay and had been defended by 1,500 men under the command of Lt.-Colonel Francisco Lara y Valdez. The fortifications were among the most advanced for their time and are still preserved as part of downtown Pascagoula's Historic District today! One account says that General Jackson offered $5 million for the capture of Santa Anna following his victory at Petala Harrison in November 1846; but nothing came of this offer! Santa Anna himself surrendered at gopher Hill near here on Christmas day 1847 with over 20 thousand troops surrounded by 10 miles (16 kilometers) of rifle shot from Mobile Bay! Santa Anna's surrender made history as one of America's most dramatic military moments ever! After being paroled at Gopher Hill he returned home to Victoria Springs where he died two years later on March 24th 1850 . So much for GeneralsJackson & Polk getting paid... :(
Up until the early 1800s, coffee was only roasted in a small area near the city of Florence. The beans were brought overland from the region and then dried in warm weather. By 18th century, coffee had spread to Amsterdam and Paris. roasting companies started to be organized into large empires by the mid-19th century. Roasted beans would be transported through cold climates like Europe on purpose ships before being unloaded onshore and roasted. With technology advancing, it became possible to produce more consistent quality beans at home by using a direct roast method which removed all of the water soluble oils from the bean (also called “direct grinding”). This improved flavor profile but also increased caffeine levels as it used less preparation time and allowed for faster brewing times. In 1971, an automated system was developed that allows farmers to roast their own coffee with new technologies while maintaining consistency across regions

Pascagoula, Mississippi is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 6,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1824 by Scots-Irish immigrants who named it for Pascagoula, Alabama. The first settlers of Pascagoula were men from Ulster and Connaught countries who had come overland to America in search of new opportunities. They arrived as refugees on July 4, 1824. Many of these immigrants were Catholic and their faith inspired them to create a small community where they could live according to their own beliefs and practices without fear of religious or racial discrimination. One group ofthese Irishmen founded the Pascagoula & Highland society which donated land for a courthouse and schoolhouse; this society also built churches and other buildings in the town center. From this start until 1865 when Reconstruction ended following the American Civil War, Pascagoula served as an important center for African Americans who worked in various fields including shipping, agriculture, mining and manufacturing. During Reconstruction times many whites fled to northern states such as Illinois or Michigan because they were fearful that Reconstruction would lead toAfrican American control of southern plantations which would threaten white supremacy throughout America. Some black people did migrate back into Louisiana but most settled near Mobile where they began work on cotton plantations beginning in 1861 under similar conditions that prevailed south during the antebellum period: one-party rule by plantation owners with little democratic representation; harsh labor regulations; high rates of poverty and illiteracy among slaves working on large plantations; lack of access to education for poor white laborers (the “colored race”); social ostracism among free blacks living among white households; tobacco addiction among planters
Pascagoula was founded by the Menominee in 1795. The first white settlers arrived in Pascagoula in 1814, and the town was renamed after General Andrew Jackson in 1836. In 1865, Pascagoula became a city. The BP oil spill polluted the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, and has led to a declines in economic activity around Pascagoula.
