Pascagoula, Mississippi is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 133 at the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1849 by General Andrew Jackson and his family. Pascagoula was named for the ancient Pascagoula people of Alabama who traded with the Mississippian culture. The first white settler in what is now Pascagoula Township was John Smith on November 10, 1849. He built a cabin on the banks of the Missisippi River and named it "Pascal's Landing." In 1850, another white man, James Browning, settled near what is now Main Street and renamed it "Browningville." By 1865, all but one-third ofJackson County had been developed when Confederate General Robert Ewell decided to move his army from Tupelo to Sherman Avenue north of Memphis Tennessee to attack Union troops under Ulysses S. Grant. Because Sherman Avenue crossed into Indian Territory then part of Arkansas Territory (now Oklahoma), Ewell ordered his forces not to cross into Indian Territory and instead march south towards Arkansas Springs where they would rendezvous with their Confederate compatriots in support of General Nathan Bedford Forrest's raid against that state's military installations near Fort Sumter in February 1865. Ewell's orders resulted in an avoidable disaster as most of his Confederate force overran Sherman Avenue before reaching Arkansas Springs; only 5 men out of a force estimated at 15 reached Little Rock without being captured or killed. In Shawnee territory then east-central Oklahoma were some 3 million Cherokee people numbering more than 20% of the total Native American population; if these Cherokees had joined up with Confederates (as many did) they would have constituted an formidable resistance force against Grant's advancing Union armies. "Pascal's Landing" became known as "Fentonville" after Fenton Milling Company founder Elijah Goudreau whose mill stood there until 1915 when it burned down due to arson by local teenagers; Goudreau rebuilt it within two years and again called it Pascal's Landing until its destruction by fire in 1935 which also destroyed much valuable infrastructure including an early electric line running through town center serving both businesses and homes In 1982 Hurricane Hattie caused extensive damage to downtown Pascagoula leaving nearly every structure standing except for one small building that collapsed during heavy rains weeks later After years of rehabilitation work completed during Hurricane Katrina followed by efforts begun following FEMA declarations770 families were homeless within 24 hours post landfall Cities like New Orleans continue to experience chronically high levels poverty rates while rural Mississippi continues experiencing mass job loss due primarily to mechanization
