The two main businesses in Pascagoula are its post office and the Pascagoula Museum of Art. Pascagoula was founded by French missionaries in 1810 as Pointe aux Coches (Crocodile's Tooth). In 1814, it became known as Ville de Pierre (Town ofPierre). In 1837, it became known as la Petite Pascagoula (The Small Pascagoula). The name change occurred because of the influx of African Americans who had migrated to what was then white Louisiana after being emancipated from slavery on April 1, 1865. The current post office building was built in 1907 and has been used for various purposes including government offices and a music store since then. The museum opened its doors on October 10thof that year and features many artesonmuseum artifacts dating back to 1840s such as a slave wagon that once belonged to General Andrew Jackson and an early cotton gin. In 1906–07 Caddo Indian chief John Ross led a peaceful uprising against white settlers in Marshall County over land claims made by some farmers thereon which were later ratified by Ulysses S Grant during his presidency years later; this event is also commemorated with the annual "John Ross Parade" which takes place downtown each November. This event is significant because most white residents did not want Indians living among them anymore so they were forced out of their ancestral lands beginning around 1830s when Native American treaties were signed surrendering all or part of these lands to whites/US settlers under pressure from US officials afraid of another Indian war or reprisals if hostilities broke out again.
