Oxford, Mississippi is a small town in central Mississippi. The population was 7,463 at the 2010 census. Oxford is the county seat of Rankin County. The early history of Oxford is shrouded in mystery. Some believe that it may have been founded by Paleo-Indians and others believe that it was founded by the Choctaws. There are no records of Oxford being established as a community until after 1815 when it became part of Scott County. The first settler in what is now Oxford was John Winchester who arrived in 1824 and built his cabin on the bluff overlooking Oxford Creek. In 1827, James Fenton moved to Oxford from Yazoo City and opened a store on NASDAQ Street which served as the nucleus for future businesses in town including cotton ginners, provisioners, and farmers. In 1830, Fenton donated land to form what would become the courthouse square today. In 1834, he donated land to build the first school which would serve as both an elementary and high school until consolidation with Hinds County in 1906. The town developed quickly due to its location near several transportation hubs such as NASDAQ Street and State Road 910 (later I-55). The town grew rapidly during the 1850s thanks to new roads being constructed such as US 31 which connected Jackson with Corinth via Athens and Tupelo respectively; this route later became I-565 which runs through downtownOxford today In 1870, local entrepreneur Elisha l Caldwell donated $5,000 towards building a steamboat landing on Thames River opposite present day US 231st St & Airport Rd.; this landing eventually became known as Oxfords Landing Site where commercial ventures were commenced such as a grocery store (1872), post office (1878), hotel (1912), car dealership (1963) & more recently an agricultural processing plant(2006).
