Oxford, Mississippi is a town of approximately 30,000 people that has been in the military for over 60 years. The community has had a diverse and impactful role in the United States Military. From World War I to Desert Storm to Afghanistan, Oxford has seen some of history’s most important battles fought on its soil. The town was first settled by Confederate soldiers during the Civil War. After the war, many of these soldiers turned their backs on their former beliefs and decided to live in Oxford as civilians. This decision led to the founding of The Oxford Volunteer Fire Department in 1875. The department was later renamed The Oxford Volunteer Police Department in 1927. The military presence inOxford began with World War I when General John J. Pershing sent troops to fight against German forces throughout Mississippi. The town quickly became known as “the wartime capital of America” due to its strategic location and importance within enemy lines. In 1918, President Woodrow Wilson ordered all American troops deployed abroad be withdrawn and sent home without leave – this event is often considered to be the start of World War II. During World War II, Oxford played an important role in providing logistical support for American forces fighting in both Europe and Asia Pacific theaters. industrial production within Oxfords borders increased greatly due to war-time demand; this contributed greatly to economic growth within the town after 1945 While no permanent U.S Army barracks were built withinOxford during peacetime (due largely to IRS regulations), Army Reserve Units were stationed at various locations throughout downtown while active duty troops were quartered at several other local hotels/motels before being discharged or transferred elsewhere at least once every six months or so[1]. One such hotel/motel which hosted active duty troop barracks during peacetime was Hilton Garden Inn on West Broad Street; however, it opened as a civilian hotel only after hostilities ended[2]. During our time as hostages held by Taliban insurgents from January 2002-October 2001 (-60 days), we resided at Stonehaven Resort located adjacent to Fort Polk State Park where Ft Polk sat prior thereto[3]. Priorities shifted somewhat following 9/11 when many Americans living outside New York City came into contact with terrorist threats emanating from that city,[4] but although security measures were tightened there have not been any reports whatsoever of attacks taking place insideOxford since then[5], good news considering that terrorists are already well-prepared for such events given their experience with civilian targets[6]. Upon returning home from captivity following 10 years spent inside Afghanistan’s Mazar-e Sharif refugee camp (after serving 3 tours thereof), I took upon myself - along with my wife -to reintroduceOXFORD TO THE WORLD! We did what we do best: entertained! We graced numerous cities across America with our talents...and made friends! What better way than spending Christmas eve surrounded by family & friends?
