Oxford, Mississippi is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. Oxford, Mississippi is a small town in Harrison County, Mississippi. The population was 2,972 at the 2010 census. Oxford is the only municipality in Harrison County. The town was founded in 1892 by white settlers from Tennessee and Kentucky who were looking for a place to settle after the end of the American Civil War. The name "Oxford" comes from an early settler's plantation called Oxford Plantation near Mobile, Alabama. The town was first known as Cedar Grove because of its abundance of cedar trees. In 1907, Oxford became a municipal unit within Harrison County and continued to be so until 2000 when it became an unincorporated community within the county again. In that year, the county legislature made changes to Harrison County's political structure which abolished municipalities and merged them with other counties into new districts. As a result of this change, Oxford lost its municipal status and no longer has any official governmental functions apart from providing services to its residents through village meetings and zoning regulations.
