The town is named afterOXFORD University in England which first opened its doors to students in 1869. The town's history dates back to the 1800s when it was part of Wilkinson County. In 1904, Oxford became a part of Jackson County and has been growing ever since. The first residents of Oxford were farmers who cultivated corn, wheat, and cotton. They also raised hogs and chickens for their own use as well as selling eggs and meat from their homes. By 1910, the population had grown to over 100 people and many businesses were established in the community including a bakery, grocery store, post office, lumberyard, hotel/motel/conference center, mechanic shop and several churches. In 1927-1928 construction began on what would become known as "The Mall," which was dedicated to improving business opportunities for the citizens of Oxford. It housed a variety of businesses such as banks (the First National Bank), insurance companies ( Inter-State Life Insurance Company), shoe stores ( department store Fords) and more! The mall continued to be an important economic engine for the community until it closed its doors in 2002 due to budget cuts by then Mayor Bozeman Jr.). In 1987-1988 a major renovation project took place on "Old Main" which included new flooring, paintingand gutting of walls that had been done years earlier without much success. This project represented a big step forward for Oxford because it allowed for more efficient operations by adding new space for classes and meetings; increased access to resources such as bathrooms; improved customer service; and added functionality such as handicap accessible ramps! Old Main now houses both the library & mainframe computer lab used by various schools throughout central Mississippi! Throughout its historyOxford has always strived to maintain close ties with family & friends back home – even if those friends lived miles away or were unable to attend events& celebrations hosted within our community!! Many landmarks remain standing today that are directly traceable back to these early days: A large convenience store built on State Highway 143qvw called "Pegasus" still stands strong (& features delicious cinnamon rolls!), while "Oasis" - an old fashioned swimming pool - continues providing fun & exercise alike year round! And don't forget about our annual Farmers' Market held every February where locals can purchase fresh produce from local farmers AND buy antique items from area collectors!!!

The town's prosperity declined during the 1840s and 1850s as cotton prices plummeted, but it regained its prominence in the 1870s as a manufacturing center for goods exported to Europe.Oxford declined again during the 1880s and 1890s, but resumed its rise in the early 1900s as a result of railroad development and modernizing agriculture. The town reached its current level of prosperity in the 1920s when it became an important hub for cotton production in Mississippi.
