Oxford, Mississippi is a small town located in the eastern part of the state of Mississippi. The population of Oxford was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is one of the smallest towns in Mississippi and it straddles two counties - Butler County to its north and Hinds County to its south. The town has a small-town feel with many residents who are related to one another. There are also a few businesses and churches in Oxford. The first settler in Oxford was Samuel Hammond who arrived in 1796. Hammond built his home on what is now Payne Avenue. He married Sarah Chilton and they had four children: Samuel, Susannah (known as Nannie), Johnathan, and Mercy (known as Molly). Hammond died in 1802 and his wife remarried John Pritchard whose family also lived in Oxford for some time before moving away. In 1824, Atkinson bought land adjoining present-day Payne Avenue from Samuel Hammond's widow for $500 dollars which he used to start an agricultural plantation called Athens Plantation near what is now University Boulevard. Atkinson later changed this name to Whitney Plantation after his friend James Whitney donated land for this purpose In 1827, Andrew Jackson became president of the United States and ordered all slaves brought back into Africa under martial law known as "The Great Migration". This event made Oxford much more difficult due to the large numbers of freed slaves who were then living hereabouts free or fugitives from slave owners across the state . A group of men from Oxford decided they would try to start a school so that these freed blacks could have access to education unlike most African Americans living within miles radius of cities such as Memphis or Jackson . They named their new school "The School for Negroes" In 1865, during Reconstruction following the end of American slavery, white supremacists began patrollingOxford's streets looking for black people to attack or steal property. As a result, violence erupted between whites and black citizens throughout 1865-1868 known as The Rioting Season . In response by ordering all black residents out of town on April 25th 1865 (), Governor Alonzo Horton ordered National Guardsmen intoOxford while officers used pepper spray against any black males not immediately leaving their homes It wasn't until 1893 when Rhodes College opened its doors thatOXFORD BAY COLLEGE became truly integrated with university programs attended by both races starting on September 15th 1895 As recently as 1993 there were still only 2 students per instructor at Rhodes College

Oxford, Mississippi is a town in Yazoo County, Mississippi. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Yazoo County. Oxford was founded in 1883 by General John F. Butler and two other generals as a place for soldiers to rest and recuperate after campaigning in what is now Alabama and Tennessee. The town was named for an English cathedral that had been destroyed by fire during the American Civil War. Oxford became a small cotton town with few businesses until the early 1900s when it began to grow as a result of its location on the banks of the Yazoo River between Muscle Shoals and Chattanooga. The river made shipping possible and made Oxford a logistics center for cotton plantations in central Mississippi. The explosion of the Union munitions factory at Pea Ridge killed more than 100 people in 1865 and led to increased competition among local manufacturers for workers on southern cotton plantations which resulted in joblessness, poverty, crime, and social unrest throughout much of Mississippi during Reconstruction. In 1875 Oxford voters approved a $10 per capita income tax which helped reduce poverty but also created tension between rich white farmers and poor black farmers who were not able to afford property taxes or school tuition for their children while white landowners could pay hundreds of dollars per acre in annual rent to maintain their farmscape without having to laborintensive crops or animal husbandry. The Reconstruction Era ended with Confederate victory over Union forces at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865 followed by Reconstruction's collapse across much of southern America due primarily to rising prices of foodstuffs relative to wages while whites lost political power as they were forced into desegregation schools, military service, or unemployment lines following laws enacted during Reconstruction that aimed to integrate all races into society without allowing them self-determination through voting rights or self-government within racially segregated constituencies known as "Jim Crow" states including Ole Miss where African Americans did not have voting rights until 1965 despite being counted together using race when generating statewide census data). In 1885 General Butler purchased 5 square miles (12 km2) near present-day Oxford from Andrew Johnson for $3 million although he never lived there because he preferred Indianola Springs north of Memphis instead because it had better soil quality and access to water resources essential for his army's needs while Indianola Springs lay idle because its owner refused permission from Johnson's successor Ulysses S Grant IIIto build him a hotel ThereafterOxford grew rapidly along with numerous new businesses established around downtown such as insurance companies (1892), banking (1902), real estate (1909), Ford dealership (1911), ice cream parlor (1920), post office (1927), shoe store/shoe manufacturing plant(1929–30), golf course(1945–46)and petrochemical plant(1966). In 1941 local residents successfully lobbied Congress pass the National Defense Authorization Act which provided funding for troops stationed overseas including 1,500 men from Oxfordshire enlisted into Major General Orville Freeman's 3rd Infantry Division deployed against Japan; however this measure failed To become law due mainly To powerful antiwar sentiment prevalent throughout most United States upon World War II beginning with President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal legislation enacted following Pearl Harbor On December 7th 1940 two days prior Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor drawing Ulysses S Roosevelt INTO WAR FDR authorizes first use Of atomic bombing raids against Japan; this event leads directly To Second World War
