Olive Branch is a small town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,904 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hinds County. The name "Olive Branch" comes from an oak tree that grows near the town center. A local legend says that General Andrew Jackson's army stopped at the wooded area on their way to battle against Native Americans in 1812 and ordered one of its officers, James Fenton, to build a cabin there as a stopover while they traveled further into Indian Territory. The cabin became known as Olive Branch Station and today it is home to the Olive Branch Historical Museum which tells stories about early settlers who lived in and around the community. In 1886, Olive Branch was founded by John Hogg and his brother-in-law David Dixon as a post office with ZIP code 76501. On December 12, 1889, it was renamed after General Andrew Jackson's eldest son, Ulysses S. Grant Woodson (1824-1908), who had been named acting Secretary of War under President Polk during the latter's term of office (March 4 – July 4). Ulysses S. Grant Woodson also served as Mayor of Gettysburg from 1897 until his death in 1908; he is buried at Elmwood Cemetery there. In 1907, Olive Branch was designated as a national agricultural market center by act of Congress undersecretary John Bates Clark et al.. Today it remains primarily an agricultural community with a population of around 375 people; however some manufacturing and service businesses have begun to grow there too over the years including Ford Motor Company (1937) and First National Bank (1991). The first post office in Hinds County opened on November 1st 1881 at what is now known as Business Depot Road/Ulysses S Grant Woodson Boulevard; it operated for three months before being closed due to lack of mail volume & competition from other towns in Hinds County . The next post office established in this area was located at Newtonia on January 3rd 1888 which lasted until May 2nd 1889 when it closed due to low mail volume & high cost for postage stamps . Olive Branch is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 8,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jackson, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area. Olive Branch was founded in 1837 by Andrew Lamar and his family from Kentucky. The community was named after Olive Ridley Oak, a tree that stands outside the town limits. The first post office in Olive Branch opened on December 1, 1837. In 1840, Andrew Lamar married Anna Ladd and they started a small cotton plantation east of town. They had two children: Andrew Lamar Jr., born in 1841 and Anna Ladd Lamar, born in 1843. Anna died young; her husband never remarried and died in 1901. In 1865-1867 local white men led by Jno Toler burned down several black homes near what is now Olive Branch to drive out African Americans who were living there as tenants or employees of white people (the so-called "Black Reconstruction"). This event helped set the stage for the civil rights movement which began about 15 years later when Ole Miss students Chaney et al.. boycotted their school during this time period because they felt it violated their human rights to attend an all black institution while African Americans were not given full access to education constitutionally mandated under the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution
Olive Branch was founded in 1837 by a group of men from the town of Olive in what is now Jackson, Mississippi. The town was named for a branch of the Coosa River that flowed through the area. The first settlers were farmers and their families who farmed land near present-day Olive Branch. In 1841, a post office was established in Olive Branch and remained in operation until it closed in 1907. In 1892, a railroad line was constructed between Meridian and Jackson and the town of Olive Branch became situated on one side of the tracks. Because Olive Branch had no phone service, residents scrambled to get hold of local newspapers to learn about events happening around them. One such newspaper article mentioned that “the people have decided they will not stand for Indian Removal” and so began an uprising against white supremacists who planned to move the Native American population away from their homes. The standoff ended when soldiers arrived with orders to clear out the natives. As part of this effort, many citizens were killed or maimed as a result of violence committed by both sides.
