The Naval History and Heritage Command’s history of the Ocean Springs Naval Yard can be traced back to 1851. The first naval yard in Mississippi was opened at Biloxi by Commodore John Rodgers in 1853. The yard became known as the “Old Navy Yard” and served as a depot for the navy until it closed in 1907. In that year, the navyyard reopened under new management as the Ocean Springs Naval Yard and Dock Company. The first commissioned ship from the newyard was USS Constitution on November 9, 1912. The yard grew rapidly with its primary mission being to build warships for the United States Navy. By 1916, Osprey had become one of Mississippi’s largest naval yards with a total of nine vessels constructed there including four battleships, two cruisers, three destroyers, and three submarines. In 1921, Osprey moved into its current location on Harrison Street within walking distance of bothcivilian population and military facilities. This move marked an important development in naval warfare as it made Ocean Springs one of America’s principal navalyards where ships were built both afloat and ashore. During World War II, Osprey played an instrumental role in producing over 50% of all US Navy warships built at Gulfport-Biloxi-Jacksonville- Mobile Bay Area During peacetime, Osprey has been used for storage orrepair purposes only once (1948). On July 1st 1959 basic repair work began on USS Enterprise (CVN 65) which had been docked at our facility since October 1958 following Restoration operations aboard VMF(G) 482 during Operation Neptune’s Spear

Ocean Springs, Mississippi is a small town in the state of Mississippi. The population was 1,594 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Gulf Coast about twenty-five miles west of Memphis. The oldest settlement in Ocean Springs was founded by Englishmen in 1819 and it became a city in 1902. In 2009, Ocean Springs was named America's Best Place to Live by Forbes Magazine. The economy of Ocean Springs is based largely on agriculture and fishing. Manufacturing also plays a role in the local economy. There are several hospitals and schools within the town limits as well as two casinos which contribute to its $600 million per year GDP (gross domestic product). The town has a rich history dating back to 1819 when settlers from England arrived for what would becoming known as "the free country". They built homes near an area now known as Meridian Street and started trading with other parts of the United States. By 1828, there were over eighty residents living in Ocean Springs and it had become an official city under control of Choctaw Indians. In 1902, Mayor John Ahern bought land east of downtown for $50,000 that would become what is today's Square Park Downtown area. This allowed him to build what would eventually be called City Hall/Orpheum Theatre complex which still stands today - one of only two buildings remaining from that time period still standing in towns across America! Not long after this event happened, new businesses began opening up around downtown including another hotel/civic building (now Orpheum Ballroom), three banks (First National Bank & Trust Company; Peoples National Bank; Union Pacific Railroad), four grocery stores (Granada Grocery Co., Mrs Laddie Smith's Store; Market Basket Co.), five car dealerships (Roadmaster Automobiles Inc.; Ford Motor Company; Mercury Motors Inc.; Plymouth Auto Sales Co.), six restaurants (!), thirteen churches (!), twelve school districts (!), fourteen medical clinics (!), eleven printing plants (!) and seven cotton plantations (=!). All these businesses created many jobs but most importantly helped grow the economic base within downtown where many families lived until recently! As can be seen throughout American history - things have always been mixed together hereabouts making for intense competition during various stages of development! Today we see some amazing progress being made such as work happening at both square park downtown and nearby Mercy Health University while also creating more than 100 construction jobs (+!) just outside our doors!
