This event marked a major change for these community members who had hitherto been living separately from other races within their own racial enclave
On July 12, 1851, the first steamboat on the Mississippi River was launched from Ocean Springs. The boat was named the "Eagle". The ferry service between Ocean Springs and Gulfport began in 1868. In 1916, Gulfport became a city and the ferry stopped running. In 1922, Ocean Springs had its own oil refinery. The refinery produced gasoline and other products for local use until it closed in 1984. In 1985, Gulfport built its first shopping mall which remains open today as the "Gulfport Mall".
