The history of the army in Ocean Springs, Mississippi begins with the arrival of the United States military to the area in 1821. The first American military presence in what is now Ocean Springs was a small detachment under Captain George Washington Parke. The U.S. military garrisoned Fort Adams on the opposite side of Mobile Bay from where Naval officer Samuel Farragut landed his squadron of ships on April 16, 1825 to attack and capture Mobile Bay. The U.S. Military presence in Mississippi increased as the state grew more prosperous during the antebellum period. In 1846, President James K. Polk ordered all military installations be closed throughout America due to financial constraints caused by Civil War-era debt incurred by both sides. This left only two garrisons in Mississippi: Fort Jackson at Jacksonport and Fort Gulf islands at Pearl River near Biloxi (now part of Jackson). In 1865, after Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, General William Taney took command of all American forces east of Confederate lines and began construction on Vicksburg Fortress which would become one of America's most important strategic fortifications during the Civil War years. The Army garrisoned Vicksburg until it was surrendered on July 4, 1863 following three days of continuous combat between Union forces and Confederate troops commanded by General Robert E Lee (later Field Marshal Robert E Lee). The United States Army served in Ocean Springs from 1862 to 1865. In 1862, the 1st Mississippi Infantry was organized in Ocean Springs and mustered into service on October 20th. The regiment was attached to the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, Confederate forces during the Battle of Corinth on November 6th. The regiment participated in operations at Monmouth Court House on December 16th and 17th. On January 1st 1863, the regiment was transferred to the 4th Brigade, 3rd Division, Army of Tennessee under General Stoneman. The brigade fought in the Battles of Nashville and Chattanooga on February 15-17th and March 5-7th respectively; it also participated in operations against Johnson's army near Lookout Mountain on April 25th. During these engagements, the regiment inflicted a great number of casualties upon its enemies. On May 10th it was assigned to Majestic's division which consolidation resulted in its being attached to I Corps under General Banks. In this capacity it participated in various campaigns including Robert Ewell's raid through North Carolina on July 24-26TH 1864; during that operation it lost one man killed and four wounded – all among enlisted men not belonging to either artillery or infantry regiments present. On September 14TH 1864, after Confederate troops evacuated Corinth for lack of munitions (due to blockade), 1/2 MSI reorganized as a three battalion unit with companies from Jackson County (Ft Myers) Volunteers (3), Lewis County (4) & Hancock County (1). These three battalions were redesignated as: Company A - Jackson Force Company B - Lewis Battalion Company C - Hancock Battalion The 1/2 MSI became an independent battalion again when part of I Corps commanded by Major General James Longstreet; this battalion served until early 1865 when it reverted back to organization within III Corps under Major General John Pemberton
