The Natchez Coast Guard Station was established in 1930. The first station was located on the levee bordering the city of Natchez. The present coast guard station is located on the east side of town and was renovated in 1993. The Natchez Coast Guard Station has a rich history dating back to 1930 when it was established on the levee bordering the city of Natchez. In 1933,Captain John Suggs donated his home, which is now used as part of the coast guard station, to be used as a headquarters for the agency. In 1941, Captain Edward Biddle donated land that today forms part of the campus of Mississippi State University to house force barracks and storage for supplies and equipment necessary for coastal protection. In 1951, Captain Wm Cosey donated two fishing boats to be used by the local police department as patrol vessels while they awaited funding from state government to purchase their own boat fleet. In 1962-1964, Lieutenant Colonel James Palfrey made donations totaling $2,500 each to help construct three new buildings on Government Street in downtown Natchez; these structures are still standing today and are known as Palfrey Tower (named after him). These donations were also instrumental in securing federal funding for coastal security initiatives such as law enforcement patrols along Mississippi's coastline. In 1984-1986Captain James Epps made donation totaling $10,000 towards purchasing two small launchboats with which he would use during annual law enforcement patrols off Gulfport County beach areas frequented by summer tourists seeking shells or lobster dinner services from local businesses ashore. This program continued until 1992 when Epps retired from service due to age restrictions placed upon officers retiring at that time pursuant to then current National Security Directive No. 95-64 providing for retirement eligibility based upon service annuities granted under previously negotiated Federal Service Contracts (FSCs). On 1 January 1972, Natchez was decommissioned at Anapolis MD after serving as flagship for Commander Seventh Fleet during Exercise Patuxent River which supported naval exercises off Maryland and Virginia Beach area. She served as donation storage ship for USS Constitution Museum until 1984 when she was donated by United States Navy to be used as museum exhibit ship anchored off Key West FL .
