The Natchez, Mississippi military gift history can be traced back to the early 1800s. The city was founded by African Americans in 1819 and soon became a center of slave trade and military activity. The area saw significant battles during the American Revolution, as well as skirmishes and campaigns against Native Americans. In 1846, Natchez was incorporated as a town and its black population rapidly grew. By 1861, when Confederate forces attacked the town, it had become an important strategic center in the war effort. In retaliation for this victory over Spanish forces in Alabama during the Mexican War (1846-48), General Jackson ordered General William Troup to march on Mobile with 5,000 men and burn all its stores and homes before withdrawing back downriver to New Orleans.
