Moss Point was founded by the Menard brothers in 1875. They were a family of farmers who built a small town on the banks of the Mississippi River. The Menards became involved in the military and navy, and their businesses expanded to include shipbuilding and shipping. In World War I, Moss Point was one of the first American towns to volunteer for service. The men formed an agricultural battalion and served in France as part of the 9th Infantry Division. Afterward, they returned home to found a thriving community that had taken on new challenges since 1914. Today, Moss Point is known for its fishing industry, manufacturing (including munitions), agriculture, and automotive manufacturing. Its economy is based largely on maritime trade with Europe and Asia. However, it also has strong ties to education and government services. Moss Point's military history dates back to World War II. The town was the home of the 8th Marine Regiment, which served in the Pacific Theater. In 1944, Moss Point became a port for Admiral Chester Nimitz's First Fleet, and during this time, it also housed the Mississippi Coast Guard. The Marines left Moss Point in 1946 and it reverted to civilian control. Since then, Moss Point has been home to various law enforcement agencies as well as active duty military units.
Moss Point is a small town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. Moss Point is part of the Jackson-Harrison Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Moss Point was John White in 1819. He and his family built a cabin on the banks of the Pearl River. The first post office was established at White's Cabin in 1828, but it remained unoccupied for several years because no one wanted to set up shop near the river. In 1837, Wm. Aiken organized a company to build a ferry across the Pearl River to enable goods and passengers to move between Harrisonville and Yazoo City. This boat service became very important for trade and commerce along the Yazoo River system. After two years of construction, Aiken's Ferry Company reached its ultimate destination by crossing over into Harrisonville on December 12, 1840; this made Moss Point an official community under Jackson County jurisdiction for the first time! Aiken's Ferry Company soon became embroiled in legal trouble with another group of entrepreneurs who had formed themselves as "The Pearl River Navigation Company." Soon after its establishment, this new company began shipping goods directly from Nashville, Tennessee instead of going through Aiken's Ferry Company! This thorny legal situation led to bitter business competition that ultimately led to bankruptcy for both parties involved in late 1840 or early 1941. Unfortunately for Moss Point taxpayers (and possibly also for John White), this event spelled curtains for their tiny town - though it would re-emerge as an incorporated village following a series of events which took place during World War II! Some interesting note about early Moss Point: according to historical records dating back to 1907 (when Mississippi statehood came into being), moss point had only 2 stores and 11 residents! That year also marks when Andrew Hogg donated land north of present day downtown Moss Point on which modern day businesses sit; thus beginning what would later be known as Main Street!. Additionally some local historians maintain that there may have been another earlier settlement located just east of where Purdy’s Department Store now stands – considering current evidence does not support claims that any such spot existed prior to white settlement hereabouts! Overall though – due largely à development within continuing waves emanating fromJackson County itself – moss point experienced explosive growth throughout most every decade through much of this century; making it among today’s most rapidly growing municipalities within our region!) Moss Point is a small town in Quitman County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 710 at the 2010 census. Moss Point is part of the Jackson, MS Metropolitan Statistical Area. Moss Point was founded on September 15, 1884 by Captain James A. Moss and his wife Anna as a cotton plantation named "Moss Landing". On January 1, 1889, the village of Moss Landing merged with Quitman to form a new incorporated Village of Quitman. In 1925, Moss Point became an unincorporated community located within the Jackson metropolitan area. The first post office at Moss Point was established on January 5, 1892. The present post office building was built in 1928 and renovated in 2001-2002 according to current Federal style criteria. It is one of two brick buildings in town (the other being the old Methodist church). In 1927-1928, Captain James A. Moss donated land for a public school district that would serve both townships and their respective families until after World War II when all schools were centralized under one roof in Jackson Valley School District #1 (later renamed Meridian School District). The first school building dedicated to this purpose was erected on what is now Carpenter's Store Road east of where Post Office Park now stands; it served from 1927-1927 and burned down in 1928 due to damage done by Hurricane Betsy while still under construction; however, don't be fooled by its simple appearance - it actually held about thirty students during its brief existence!
