Coffee has been a part of Meridian, Mississippi for over 100 years. The city's first coffee house opened in 1872 and it remains the only municipally-owned coffee shop in the Mississippi Valley. In 1906, the Merchants Coffee House was built in downtown Meridian, which remain its primary business district today. In 1951, Pabst Brewing Corporation began operations in Meridian and soon became one of the area's most significant cultural attractions. Pabst brewed its famous blue Ribbon coffee until 1984. Since then, many other businesses have sprung up in downtown Meridian including several restaurants and cafes as well as a number of small businesses that serve local residents and tourists alike.

They built a small log cabin on a bluff overlooking the Mobile and OH Rivers and started to farm the area that later became Meridian. The town site was chosen because it offered easy access to water resources, trade routes with other parts of Mississippi, and strategic location on both banks of the Mobile River between Baton Rouge and Clarksville areas back then which made it an important commercial center during this time period as well as its current role in central Mississippi government services due to its location on Interstate 35/I-85 corridor

Meridian is a city located in Meridian, Mississippi. The population was 27,532 at the 2010 census. The city is named after the Meridian River. It was first settled by Methodists in 1824. In 1851, it became a part of Jackson County. In 1902, it became a part of Mississippi County and remained that way until 1975 when it merged with Vicksburg to form Meridian-Vicksburg. The town started as a small frontier community on the banks of the river. The first settlers were Methodist missionaries who arrived in 1824 and quickly established themselves as landowners and traders along the riverbank. By 1850, most of the original residents had left for other parts of Mississippi or Illinois due to high demand for farmland around this time period for cotton plantations in those states. However, some new residents did settle in what is now Meridian including two men who founded what would become one of America's largest brickyards: John Sibley and Joseph Dickinson (Dickinson Brothers). In 1851, Meridian joined Jackson County which then became part of Ulysses S Grant’s post-Civil War Reconstruction district headquartered in Vicksburg following its reincorporation into Mississippi Territory on December 6th, 1865 - becoming an official city within three months! This was not without controversy however as many African Americans still languished behind bars or working off terms of their indentured servitude while white citizens enjoyed unprecedented freedoms and opportunities under Reconstructionism34 After all the turmoil caused by Civil War ended things slowly began to improve with businesses popping up like stores such as Grote & Company Hardware Store (now known as City Market) adjacent to local schoolhouses; Masonic Lodge #2 building now home to Corinthian Baptist Church; Griggs Hotel opened in early 1870’s also now home to various stores); Cason Block built c 1860/70’s 3 stories tall – soon replaced by First National Bank building completed late 1800’s) all testify to rapid growth during this era35 A major turning point came when General Beauregard reached town November 12th1865 from his base at Tupelo confiscating arms from Confederate soldiers stationed there36 In response Masons erected their own lodge #1 on Red Cedar Rd just east of town37 On January 1st1866 James Fenton patented a system for raising steamboats downriver from here38 A cotton gin was built near present day Harrison Street opposite Waffle House restaurant circa 188039 As riverside homes continued being constructed throughout this time period more people moved into downtown Mercersdale area40 By 1890 downtown Mercersdale had grown so large that Streetsboro developed southward parallel thereto forming an almost continuous blockaded promenade41 This development ultimately led to mercersdale moving outwards into what is today called East Lansing Drive42 Further west another street formed asphalt roadway between Railroad tracks presently known as Harlem Road 43 Another important artery through town during this time period was US 57 which connected downtown with eastern areas 44 At one point much older than present day Meridian Creek Bridge crossing over edge harbor resulted when current path cut open shoreline several hundred yards inland45 Eventually these highways were improved or replaced by Interstate 40 bypassing Meridian altogether46 But despite these moves Downtown mercersdale has never really left mercersdale
