The Navy has been in Meridian, Mississippi since 1871. The first navy ship to be commissioned here was the USS Constitution in 1881. The land that is now Meridian was purchased by the US government for $5,000 from the Cherokee tribe in 1796. The area around what is now downtown Meridian was initially used for hunting and fishing grounds, but it became a important center for military transportation and operations during the Civil War. The Battle of Meridian took place on January 9th, 1865, just two days after Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House in Virginia. In 1898, the US Military Academy moved to what is now downtown Meridian and began conferring degrees there. In 1902, a new saltworks were built here which continued to produce salt until 1959. During World War II, many ships were constructed here including USS Enterprise (CV-6) and USS Hornet (CV-8). After the war ended, many of these vessels were sold or scrapped and only a few remain today as museum pieces or tourist attractions.

Meridian is an unincorporated community located in Jackson County, Mississippi. The community was established in 1892, and it was named for the river that runs through it. The population of Meridian was 1,902 at the 2000 census. The community is located on the banks of the Mississippi River, just east of Jackson. It is bordered by Beaumont to the north and west, Cleveland to the south and east, and a small portion of Harrison County to the northwest. The area that now makes up Meridian was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. In 1795, a group of Frenchmen led by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne discovered what would become Meridian while exploring their new territory along the lower Mississippi River. They named this area Μερινησός (Merenopsis). The French renamed everything they found along the river after themselves or their god - including Beaumont Township which became be name for Meridian when it was organized as a village in 1842. In 1851, members of Congress voted to rename Jackson County after General Andrew Jackson - who had died two years earlier during his presidency. The change from Μερινησός (Merenopsis) toJackson took effect on November 1st, 1851. At first, few people lived in what is now Meridian because there were no water resources available nearby. However, over time development started around town due to its proximity to mills and other businesses near downtown Jacksonville. Today's town began developing as a result of several factors: its location on one of America's most important rivers; easy access to transportation if you did not have personal transport; good soil for crops; and plentiful natural gas reserves nearby which made oil production possible in later years withoutRequires special permits from state officials

Edward Walker (R-SD). The affair came to be known as "Navytoon" because many of these items were hidden from view during official visits by President Reagan and his advisers.) For example, since 9/11 there has been an increased focus on counterterrorism threats and ships have been replaced by planes in gifting practices. Meridian is a town in Jefferson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,938 at the 2010 census. Meridian was incorporated on November 14, 1892. It is named for Meridian Hill, which overlooks the town and its harbor. The first post office in Meridian was established on December 5, 1892. The first store in Meridian opened on May 12, 1893. The community of Meridian grew gradually during the early decades of the 20th century as farmers settled around it along U.S. Highway 61 and State Highway 623 (now I-10). In 1910–11 a road ran through the center of town to connect with US 61; this road became known as "Meridian Boulevard." By 1925 all but one house in town had been built; by 1930 there were more than 100 businesses in town and over 200 people living There were also several churches and schools within minutes' walk of most residents. By 1935 about half of all production in the local economy took place within 10 miles of town
