Meridian is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,721 at the 2010 census. The first mention of a maritime gift in Meridian comes from John Hines who donated a boatload of lobster to the town on December 3, 1824. Many other local businesses followed suit and contributed items such as tools and furniture to help with the growth of the town. By 1829, Meridian had become an important port for shipping goods from Jackson County and around Gulf Coast states. In 1830, it became known as "the most thriving city on the Mississippi River". In 1835, merchants in Meridian formed what is now called the Merchants' Exchange which helped promote trade between Meridian and surrounding areas. This institution was instrumental in helping to spur new economic development within the community and make it one of the most important ports on the Mississippi River during that time period. In 1860, when Confederate forces occupied Meridian while they fought against Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant, many businesses within the city closed their doors or moved away because they were not able to get supplies necessary for battle. However, many merchant families continued to operate business until after Confederate forces surrendered in 1865. The post-war boom times for Meridian were short-lived; however, its economy has kept pace with changes over time: it has seen increased job opportunities thanks to innovations like digital marketing and mobile technology; furthermore, its growing diversity has attracted talented professionals from throughout Northeast Mississippi and beyond who have made significant contributions to both local businesses and our cultural landscape (cf., Bridgwater). Meridian, Mississippi is a small town located in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 997 at the 2000 census. Meridian is one of the few original towns in Jackson County and has been continuously inhabited since 1836. The community was originally named for General James K. Polk, who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as United States Minister to Mexico City. A post office was established at Meridian in 1837, and it remained an active local community until 1959 when it merged with neighboring Gulfport to form the city of Gulfport-Meridian. The history of Meridian began with its founding by Captain John Hubbard and his family on December 22nd, 1836. The Hubbs were pioneer farmers who first settled along the banks of the Pearl River near present day Meridianville. In 1840, Captain Hubbard married Miss Jane Mahlon and they founded a new home called "Hubbard's Landing". They had four children: Sarah (1841-1927), John (1843-1901), Charles Leland (1845-1925) and Emma Shipley Hubbard (1847-1920). Mr. Hubbard sold his land east of present day Meridianville to Elijah Ballou in 1855 for $4,000 cash which he used to purchase 300 acres of land west ofpresent day Meridianville known as "Ballou's Landing". In 1860, Mrs. Hubbard moved from "Hubbard's Landing" to what is now known as "Moses Fenton House" on High Street just south of Interstate 575 between US 59/I-5 from east to west and US 83/I-10 from north to south where she raised her six children with their father until their mother's death in 1927 aged 94 years old having also raised eight other grandchildren over those years including Moses Fenton whose widow currently resides there with them along with two daughters - Hilda Mae Fenton and Carolyn Ann Sherrill - all descendants of Captain John Hubbard’s 14 children! It should be noted that Mrs.(Mrs.)Fenton resided there until her death due Hospitalization after a car accident occurred while she was out riding her horse one morning; however her daughter Hilda Mae managed to save enough money so that they are still able to maintain property adjacent thereto.. In 1861 Captain John Hubbs bought 300 acres more east than today's Meridianville which he renamed "Ballou's Landing". He operated a plantation business which grew into what is now known as Cushman & Wakefield Corporation which exported cotton crops across America for many years up through World War II before being acquired by Dow Chemical Company during that time period! Today you can find remnants OfCaptainJohnHubbs' plantation at Frenchman’s Bluff just outside Indianola off Walnut Street on Highway 54 about 1 ½ miles South East Of Highway 45 minutes North West Of Muskogee Avenue...It should be noted that this parcel included much higher ground than any now found within our Municipality boundaries!!!
