Meridian, Mississippi is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 6,711 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hinds County. The name "Meredith" comes from a local creek which empties into the Gulf Stream near Meridian. The area that would become Meridian was first settled by Choctaw Indians in 1796. A fort was built on what is now State Road 2 in 1829 and named Fort Meredith after General James Meredith who fought at the Battle of Gettysburg two years earlier. After the Civil War ended in 1865, many white families moved to Meridian and formed a commerce center around Fort Meredith. The town grew rapidly during Reconstruction and soon had seven banks and 100 businesses. In 1871, an act became law establishing Meridian as a city with its own government and budget. At first, city officials used money from Ft Meredith to operate the fort; but eventually they began using revenue from taxes levied on residents to finance their operations During Prohibition (1912- 1933), much of what is now downtown Meridian was built up around bootlegging operations which continued until World War II when prohibition was repealed nationally. In 1946, when Jackson became the capital of Mississippi, it merged with neighboring Jackson (later renamed Tupelo) to form one large citywide government called Jackson Department of State—an arrangement that lasted until 1959 when separateJackson City Councils were set up for both towns In 1956, due to mergers within other departments within state government, Meridian's mayor served as chairperson for all 5 southern states combined under one department chairmanship called Division 7A—a position he held until his retirement in 1992 md also played an important role developing statewide transportation plans including designing and engineering portions of I-10 which are still recognized as some of America's most beautiful highways

Meridian was founded by white settlers in 1836. The first post office was established in Meridian in 1837. In 1840, it became a city. The population declined during World War II, as most production moved to other areas of Mississippi or Florida. However, after the war, growth resumed and the city annexed more land until its current boundaries were created in 1980. Meridian has a humid subtropical climate with warm-summer temperatures year-round and average rainfall throughout the year. According to Forbes Magazine's "500 Best Places to Live" list for 2007, Meridian placed third out of 381 cities across 34 U.S. states in terms of "economic vitality." The name Meridian comes from two sources: one derived from an Indian word meaning "the place where rivers meet," and another from a federally designated stream that flows through the town center and into Jackson River (the original site of Stroudsburg). English speakers at first called it Grantsville because that was where James Grant had his plantation located before he sold it to John Leland in 1821; but this name did not catch on among local residents so they reverted back to Grantsville until about 1840 when they changed their name to Meridian after learning about British Columbia via American traders who had been exploring that part of North America since 1793! When European explorers arrived in what is now Mississippi Territory, they named all of this territory including present day Alabama - “X” for each state (Arkansas being north due east), Georgia – “K” for Kershaw County (which included partsmodern Mobile and Baldwin counties), Louisiana – “L” for Landrieu Parish (northwest corner near Baton Rouge), Missouri – “M” for Moultrie County (southwest corner near Columbia), Oklahoma – “O” for Onondaga County (northwest corner near Syracuse) etc., which led eventually to our naming convention today! And so we have come up with our current moniker: Meridian because we are located at XXXXXXXX latitude/longitudeXXXXXXX! As you can see from this informationabove, there are many derivations behind our moniker but ultimately it comes down to just MERIDIAN!

In 1855, Meridian was renamed after Major General James Fenton Meridian who had led American forces during the Mexican–American War. The townsite remained under Fenton Meridian's ownership until his death in 1865. After his death, local Mississippians organized to purchase his land and rename the town after him; this process lasted until 1870 when it reverted back to its original name of Meridian. During Reconstruction (1865-1877), Meridian underwent a series of changes that contributed to its current history: It became a black community; it lost its status as an agricultural center; and it experienced significant growth in manufacturing and services sector industries. Today, Meridian is one of the most ethnically diverse communities in Mississippi and has developed into an important cultural destination for both locals and visitors alike.
