Mccomb, Mississippi is a city in Marshall County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 6,468 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now McComb were French traders in 1699. A post office was established here in 1809 and named for John C. McCombs, who had come from what is now Tennessee and founded the town of Clarksville on the Yazoo River. The town was renamed McComb in 1827 after General James H. McCombs, who commanded the Union army that fought against Andrew Jackson at New Orleans during the American Civil War. In 1881, a Methodist Episcopal church was erected here and remains today as one ofMississippi's largest churches. McComb has been an agricultural center since before white settlement began hereabouts; early residents raised corn, cotton and other crops on their land until railroads arrived and brought industry to town in the late 1800s. The first local mills were built between 1902 and 1905 by Jno Ransom & Sons Manufacturing Company (later known as International Harvester). The town has also become home to several professional organizations such as art galleries and nightlife venues.
