The town was named for General Andrew McComb, who served as U.S. military governor of Mississippi from 1827 to 1830 and then as brigadier general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Mccomb was originally part of Jackson County and had a population of about 981 when it lost its status as a county in 1875 due to fusion with Yazoo County. Mccomb began as a small farming community on the banks of the Yazoo River opposite present-day Starkville. A steamboat landing at this location led early settlers to developprising businesses such as grocery stores, cigar stores, and hotels that continue in operation today. The first school in McComb was built by John Hogue in 1871 and later moved to what is now First Baptist Church before being replaced by an graded school system which operated until 1896 when statehood made education mandatory for all citizens over 21 years old within Mississippian territory (the current form of government). One important event that occurred during McCombs history is World War I when many residents decided to contribute their time and resources to help local Higgins munitions plants turn out munitions for use against Germany and Austria. Mccomb, Mississippi is a town in Rankin County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 5,912 at the 2010 census. McComb was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1847 and named for General James McDonough who fought with General Andrew Jackson in the Battle of Vicksburg. The town's first store opened in 1851. It became a railway junction before it was abandoned in the 1940s. Mccomb was post office from 1852 to 1865. In 1907, the first black American teacher in Rankin County, Lillie Mae Thornton taught mathematics to white students at McCombs School. A cotton gin and storage depot were built near McCombs in 1911 and 1914; they were used as both businesses and homes until they were destroyed by a tornado on May 15, 1974. In 1951, McCombs Boulevard was designated as a national highway system road number 95 which led to increased development around the town center including new housing estates developed by Gulfstream Airlines and other airlines during the 1950s and 1960s. The original community hall (now an art museum) burned down on October 1, 1966; it reopened as part of the "Open House" celebration that year which also included performances by local bands and local dancers. The Ferguson family owned several grocery stores within walking distance of McCombs until 1978 when they closed them all due to competition from larger convenience stores operated by African Americans working class families just north of town on Highway 90B (now known as I-10). Some more recent independent grocers have opened up since then such as Main Street Grocery & Diner located two blocks east of downtown on FM 441/ 40th Street between US 82nd Avenueand US 90th Avenue which does not operate any hours except for lunchtime Mon.-Sat.; Frontier Market operates six days per week 7am-8pm; Midtown Gourmet offers delivery service seven days per week 9am-6pm; Joes Grocery has been open since 1984 inside what had once been a gas station across from Joe's Pizza - now home to Phillips 66 - along with twelve small convenience stores scattered throughout central Rankin County run mostly BYOB (Bring Your Own Beer). These restaurants are usually open late into night serving food that can be prepared fresh or frozen during busy periods like Valentine's Day or Fourth Of July etc...
