Coffee has been brewed in Madison, Mississippi since at least 1837. The first coffee house in town was built on the corner of Pritchard and Elm Streets by Nicholas Douglass. In 1868, Mr. Douglass opened the first grocery store in Madison and started to sell coffee. He also served as the first Mayor of Madison from 1869-1871. In 1896, Gertrude Jekyll founded a small bakery in downtownMadison which became one of the most popular places for coffee in town. She sold her business to Herron Coffee Incorporated in 1957 and continued to serve fresh coffee until it closed its doors in 1979. After Gertrude Jekyll's death, her son Lewis took over her business and ran it until it closed again in 1990. During his ownership, Lewis bought out all other shareholders and continued to operate the business under his own name until it reopened as an independent shop on Commerce Street in 2000. Since 1998, small batch coffee has been brewed at The Koffee Klatch Café located inside of the former Lewis & Clark High School (now known as Mississippi State University). This café is open every day except Sunday from 7:00am-4:00pm for students studying at MSU or staff working during school hours; daily programming includes live music upstairs during lunchtime! Jackson's successor as president of the United States, Andrew Johnson, moved residences from Meridian to Jackson's old home in1870 and renamed it after himself - Johnson City. In 1865 Union Army general Nathan Bedford Forrest raiders burned down Meridian with wide impunity while most of Mississippians were attending an agricultural fair at Columbus Park near present-day Starkville; this act sparked a community response thatrewrote history when local citizens successfully petitioned for Reconstruction laws that reinstated African Americans to their former rights and positions within society following the Civil War. The growth of Jackson City led to improvements to transportation facilities including a new railroad station (built 1887) on current-day I-10 west of town which became one of the busiest freight terminals in America serving cotton plantations throughout the deep south until closed by Amtrak in 1990; also instrumental were two major events: one took place on November 4, 1901 when then mayor John Witherspoon unveiled plans for what would become Memorial Stadium – later renamed Tiger Stadium – with seating for 80,000 spectators; and another occurred on November 25th 1909 when then governor John Minton dedicated Midland State Normal School (now Midland University) adjacent to I-10 just east of town Center Street – earlier known as Hughes Field – becoming one of only three NCAA Division I football stadiums ever constructed without assistance from private enterprise or government funding
