Madison, Mississippi is a city in the United States. The population was 21,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marshall County. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The city has a population of over 345,000 people and is located on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. Madison is also home to Jackson State University and the University of Southern Mississippi. The area that now makes up Madison was first settled by Native Americans and was known as Muscogee Nation until 1795 when it became part of Spanish Louisiana. In 1819, James K. Polk acquired 1,500 acres (600 hectares) along with land for $5 per acre from Andrew Jackson, who had just been elected president after defeating Adams in a close election. After purchasing the land, Polk named it "Madison" in honor of his former mentor and friend James Knox Polk Sr., who had died two years earlier while serving as secretary of War under President John Quincy Adams. Madison's history can be traced back to 1821 when James K. Polk purchased 1,500 acres (600 hectares) along with land for $5 per acre from Andrew Jackson Jr., who again won an election against Adams but this time he received a larger share due to his elder brother's death exemption provision which allowed him to receive compensation if he were killed or wounded in battle during the Mexican-American War which ended in1848.
