The USS Mississippi (BB-63) was the first ship to be named in honor of Madison, Mississippi. She was named in 1935 and served with distinction during World War II. In postwar years she served as a training ship for Naval aviators. In 1966 she decommissioned and was sold to the Egyptian Navy.
Madison, Mississippi is located in the midwest region of the United States. The city was founded in 1824 by a group of farmers who wanted to create a town that would be admired for its agricultural production. The name Madison comes from James K. Polk, then the president of the United States, who suggested it for a new county seat because of its location on the banks of the Mississippi River. The first blacks to live in Madison were freed slaves brought over by General Andrew Jackson during his 1837–1838 military campaign against slavery. After Jackson's election as president, he appointed free black men to important government posts and opened up sections of Mississippi to white settlement. This event led to tension between whites and blacks and helped lead to the Civil War. During Reconstruction after the Civil War, Madison became an economic center for African Americans working in white-owned businesses. In 1870, Mayor John Hebert merged two villages into one municipality, becoming one of America's first municipals. The annexation also opened up new opportunities for black residents as well as providing services such as streetlights and sewers that were not available to them before. After centuries living under different systems of governance, people from all over America converged on Madison during Hurricane Katrina when it made landfall on September 1st 2005 . Many people had never seen or experienced such devastation before – some said it was like living in another world . As many as 80% of all homes destroyed were either single family homes or apartments; most losses occured within 30 minutes after landfall . Even without any damage done physically inside those homes (a task which can take weeks) there is often psychological damage that can occur with little warning; fear anchors individuals’ senseof security and keeps them rooted in their communities even when they have no physical evidence left behind . One resident described feeling “frightened beyond words” while looking out her window just prior to landfall; she could see levees breaking open and water spilling onto her streets below
