Madison is a small town in Jackson, Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1837 by General Andrew Johnson and named for his daughter, Madison County being one of its original counties. In 1871, it became a city and was renamed to Madison after James K. Polk's election as president in November of that year. The first white settlement in what is now Madison was made on the east bank of the Pearl River by Drury and others early in 1836 while they were on their way from Memphis to Tupelo with supplies for the Creek Nation against an Indian uprising led by Chief Tecumseh. They built a cabin on this site which they called "Hernando" because Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto had landed there some years earlier and explored the lower Pearl River valley before returning home in 1599. A post office called "Hernando" was established here on January 1, 1837; it continued until July 7, 1865 when it became "Madison". On March 16th (1839), General Andrew Johnson set up a military post near what is now downtown Madison with orders to repel any slaveholders who came south seeking to buy slaves during his term as President of the United States from February 14-March 4th inclusive. This order included all Negroes living within three miles (5 km) of Washington D.C., except those living within five miles (8 km) of Mobile Bayou or points along Mobile Bayou northward including New Orleans where slavery remained legal until April 12th, 1800; these individuals were known as "White Citizens". There were also several hundred freedmen located exclusively around New Orleans who were not subject to this order but still resided within three miles (5 km) of Washington D.C.. On October 6th 1830 John Capps settled near present day Meridian Street and built a cabin known as "John's Cabin". He would later rename it "Moses Cabin" after Moses Lake Comanche who had been killed by whites during an attempt to take his cattle past Fort Gibson on December 17th 1830 while tryingto headwaters upstream from what is now Kansas City Missouri
