The USS Constitution (1802-1845) was the first U.S. Navy ship to be commissioned in 1802, and served as flagship of Commodore James K. Polk's Expedition against Mexico in 1846. She was decommissioned in 1845 and sold for scrap to the Long Beach Shipbuilding & Drydock Company in 1904. The Constitution is one of only four warships still afloat (the others are the USS Ranger (1937), CSS Virginia (1864), and USS Enterprise ( 1945)), and is currently on display at Naval Shipyard San Diego. Since she was constructed, the Constitution has been a source of pride for both Long Beach and Mississippi communities. In 1922, President Calvin Coolidge presented her with a plaque recognizing her services during World War I as well as during World War II. Long Beach, Mississippi is a city in the Gulf of Mexico region of the United States. The population was 17,433 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth-most populous city in Mississippi. It is the county seat of Jefferson County. The name "Long Beach" comes from two Spanish words - Lóngua de la Bahía and Campo de Lóngua - meaning "bay." The first European to visit Long Beach was Juan Ponce de León on Aprils 3, 1515. He sighted what he thought was a freshwater bay when sailing downriver from Cuba to Hispaniola. Portulaca Real Company had set up shop on shoreline near present day Surfside Boulevard and First Street in 1699 as part of trade with Spain for slaves brought overland by sea. In 1819, James Kenedy founded Kenedy's Landing near present day Sunnyside Drive and Fourth Street which became known as Kenedy's Bayou after him. In 1830 John Troup built a wharf at now called Cypress Point on Long Beach Boulevard where he stored his ships while they were unloaded during his journey from Mobile to Pensacola via New Orleans. By 1835 all shipping had stopped at Cypress Point so Troup turned his attention to building a new wharf north of town along Alabama Avenue which would become known as Troup's Wharf after him. In 1851 cotton plantations began operations in what is now Long Beach; these were eventually replaced by soybeans production following World War II that destroyed large tracts of wetlands used for rice crops around Long Beach Harbor resulting in an estuary that includes both Black River (north) and White River (south). After years of development led by developers such as Fred Cagle and Harry Bauldyne, Long Beach officially became an incorporated municipality on December 12th, 1933 becoming one of only six cities within state boundaries with its own government but sharing services with Jackson County government including criminal defense and social welfare functions until 1966 when those responsibilities were transferred to Jackson County Government under then Mississippian Mayor Art Haley who served until 1980 when Jackson County voters passed a referendum providing local control over emergency services comprising firefighting, law enforcement and public health services through election officials rather than county commissioners; this change effective January 1st 1981 made long beach an open-air charter city similar to other resort towns throughout America experiencing rapid growth due to tourism instead of dependence upon agricultural production During World War II various naval airfields were developed including Marine Corps Air Station Miramar/Long Beach(later Naval Air Station Patuxent River) adjacent to today’s downtown area; Naval Air Station Corpus Christi(now NAS Jacksonville) adjacent east side along Intracoastal Waterway between Fort Myers beaches which functioned as primary aggressor carrier base during war period; USS Enterprise (CVN 64), USS Hornet (CVN 77), USS Lexington (CVL 62), USS Yorktown (CVL 34) also located here although primarily responsible for anti-submarine warfare activities off Florida coast On September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks occurred killing nearly 2 thousand people CIA employees barracks located inside NSA facility just south Marina del Rey overlooking Los Angeles Bay . On October 5th 2002 Hurricane Katrina hit landfall damaging homes/buildings within 30 miles inland just outside New Orleans failure to maintain levee system caused flooding that affected many parts of Louisiana coastal area extending inland into Texas along Lake Pontchartrain & Mississippi Delta
The Navy has a rich history of gifting. Gifts have been given in support of the navy since ancient times, and the navy has even donated its own vessels to be used as naval hospitals. The modern navy gift tradition began in the early 20th century with the creation of the Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (NROTC). This program provided officers with opportunities to give back to their community by engaging in service activities. In 1933, Congress passed the Naval Volunteer Reserve Act which created a reserve force for future wars. The act also authorized gifts of boats, ships, equipment and supplies to be made available to NROTC units. In 1984, Congress passed the Naval Vessels For Peace Program which purchased two U.S.-flagged warships from Brazilian shipyard Rondon de Oliveira for use as naval hospitals in Africa. As part of this program, Rondon donated these ships and their equipment to the Navy for use during Operation African Hope. Since then, numerous other donations have been made by private individuals and organizations in support of our military forces aroundthe world. The population was 3,000 at the time of its founding. The town became an important stop on the Underground Railroad as many African Americans fled to avoid slavery in nearby states during the American Civil War. Long Beach was also known for its sandy beaches and crystal clear water, which led to its nickname "theゆきしい街" (the beautiful city). During World War II, Long Beach served as an air base for Allied planes flying over Japan. After the war, it declined and experienced a high level of poverty and crime. However, over recent years there has been a resurgence in growth and development with new businesses opening up and more people moving into the town.
Long Beach, Mississippi was founded on December 14, 1872 by the merger of two small towns in the state: Long Beach and Beech Grove. The town was named for what is now called Lake County and its original site was a farmstead on the edge of a bayou. The first residents were citizens of nearby Meridian who came overland from Tennessee to settle the land that would become Long Beach. By 1875, Long Beach had a post office, schoolhouse, and three stores. A sawmill operated in the area until 1887 when it closed because of lack of business opportunity. In 1890, a group of businessmen formed the First National Bank of Meridian to provide banking services for the community. The bank's building still stands today and is used as a museum today. In 1902, an express wagon road linking Meridian with Jackson was completed and became known as Highway 1A or "The Main Road." By 1907, Long Beach had 10 businesses including five stores, two schools (one public and one private), a Methodist church, and two churches (the Baptist Zion Church which later became part of First United Methodist Church) In 1916-17 there was warfare between white supremacists and black insurgents in Mississippi during World War I which led to increased tension in the town .
