The town also played a significant role in World War II when it was home to the Long Beach Naval Shipyard. This facility built ships for both world wars and helped to contribute to America's victory in both conflicts. It is also noteworthy that beginning in 1951, Long Beach became home to the United States Military Academy (USMA) which educated future generals and admirals throughout America's Armed Forces. It is located on US-64 and it is the county seat for Jackson County. The first permanent settler in Long Beach was James Barnes. He and his family moved from Louisiana to the area in 1849. In 1855, John Fenton bought land in what is now Long Beach from Barnes. By 1870, there were twenty eight residents living in Long Beach with one store and two schools. In 1901, a post office was established at Long Beach and it remained open until 1954 when it was closed due to lack of mail service. In 1951, a school opened up in Long Beach which became known as "John Fenton High School". The school stayed open until 1984 when it merged into Jackson County Community College District No 1 (JC2CD1). As of the 2010 census, there were 2,857 people residing in Long Beach parish including 851 African American citizens; 536 White citizens; 1 Native American citizen; 5 households of which 3 had no individuals living inside them; and 25 housing units that are owner-occupied or occupied by families with children under eighteen years old

Long Beach, Mississippi is a small town in Hilton County, Mississippi. It was founded in 1864 by James and Martha Goodnight. The population was 597 at the 2010 census. Long Beach is located on the banks of the Yazoo River. The first settlers in Long Beach were James Goodnight and his wife Martha Goodnight. They erected a log cabin on the bank of the Yazoo River in 1864. The Goodnights were among the first white people to live in Long Beach. In 1865, they began farming land around their cabin and soon had a household of six including four children. The Goodnights built two more log cabins before dying in 1886 from yellow fever contracted while traveling west to help build Fort Smith, Arkansas. Their three sons took over farm operations and added other homes as well as businesses such as an ice cream parlor and post office to their growing community until World War II when all but one of their homes were destroyed by fire or natural disasters such as hurricanes or floods. In 1955, Long Beach was designated a National Historic Landmark for its connection to history and culture in Mississippi dating back to 1864-1955
