From the time that Long Beach, Mississippi was founded in 1881 until 1949, it was an important military deployment destination for both the United States and Great Britain. This is especially true during World War II when the city hosted a large airbase which became one of the most important in the Allied war effort. Additionally, Long Beach played an important role in the Vietnam War as a strategic port from which American forces transported supplies to North Vietnam. In recent years, however, military deployments have become less common and there has been a decline in military-related gifts sent to local communities. However, this does not mean that gift history cannot be found here – there are numerous examples of soldiers and their families coming to town to celebrate special occasions such as birthdays or wedding anniversaries. In fact, some of these gifts have even been left behind by those who served here before moving on to other parts of the world. Here are five specific examples: 1) The Long Beach Police Department received a gift from USMC Reserve Unit “The Blue Devils” on its 50th anniversary in 2003. This unique item included many rare items such as a Marine Corps rifle and ammunition belt with attached helmet and shoulder holster. 2) The city also bestowed upon local firefighters an 8x8 inch bronze plaque honoring their service during World War II which can now be seen at Fire Station No. 1 on Wabash Avenue near Gateway Drive. 3) A group of servicemen from USMC Unit “The Black Knights” donated nine motorcycles (four Guzzi bikes, three Triumphs and two BSA bikes) to help fund reconstruction after Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana in 2005. 4) A plaque honouring veteran firefighters killed during Operation Neptune’s Spear – America’s largest ground offensive against North Vietnamese troops – was unveiled at Long Beach Memorial Park in 2009 by then Mayor Bob Filner after being collected by donations from veterans throughout Southern California over several years. 5) A metal sculpture of a soldier called “Handsome Harry” was dedicated at Fort Chaffee Military Base outside Mobile Alabama in 2013 following donation by retired USArmy Sergeant First Class Alvin Conell III

Long Beach, Mississippi is a small town in the Gulf of Mexico region of Louisiana. It was founded by white traders and settlers in 1819 as a fishing village on the mouth of the Assumption River. The town grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s when cotton plantations were established in nearby Tallahatchie County. By 1850, Long Beach had a population of 1,500 people and developed into an important commercial center for Gulf Coast slavery. In 1865, Long Beach was abandoned by its owners after Confederate forces burned it to the ground. The town's history has been shaped by its location at the junction of two major slave trade routes from Africa to America. Long Beach was also home to some of the earliest African American churches in Louisiana.
