Long Beach is a small town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson, MS Micropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Long Beach goes back to 1892 when it was named for Captain Samuel J. Long and his wife Clara Barton. Captain Long had been a member of the U.S. Army in Mexico during the Mexican-American War and he decided to name his new community after General James Longstreet, one of the leading generals during that conflict. The first post office was opened in 1893 and operated under the name of "New Beginnings." In 1907, it changed its name to "Long Beach" after Captains Samuel J. Long and Wm Treadway (the original postmaster). The present day town was platted in 1909 by resident Isaac Asbury and others who were interested in developing a commercial area on their property near what is now Interstate 55/Upper Broadway Avenue between Gulfport and Hattiesburg Streets. In 1912, residents of neighbouring Hattiesburg petitioned for cityhood because they believed that their economy would be more prosperous if they were included within Jackson; however, this petition was not favorably received by Mayor Godfrey Hargrave who instead recommended that Hattiesburg annex Long Beach into its municipal limits instead On November 1st 1912, an ordinancewas passed establishing Higginsville as the legal successor to Long Beach On December 2nd 1912 citizens of Higginsville voted overwhelmingly to become a city with separate governance from Jackson The first mayor of Higginsville was Dr John Skelton who served from 1914 until 1916 On January 1st 1917 Mayor Harmon Gentry appointed Wm Easley as City Controller which functioned as both mayor and controller . However on May 5th 1917 Wm Easley resigned due to illness leaving Mayor Harmon Gentry with sole authority over municipality affairs . Aftermath several proposals forController were made but no action taken until October 15th 1947 when former City Councilman Cephus Beason became Controller followingMayor Gentry's death less than one year later
