Long Beach is located in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 7,552 at the 2010 census. It is the only incorporated community in Jackson County. The town was founded by early settlers in 1832. The first post office was established in 1835. The name of the town was changed to Long Beach (pronounced "long-bah") after a landing on Long Island on July 8, 1848 by Commodore John Condon's squadron of Ussher type boats which explored the Mississippi River while under British Navy command. The first store opened in 1840 and it continued until 1906 when it closed because of economic reasons. There were no schools until 1886 when a schoolhouse was built and it continues to serve as a public school today. In 1902, an electric streetcar system called the "Eagle" arrived in Long Beach and service began between downtown Long Beach and various other villages along the river including Port Hudson and New Orleans. On October 1, 1907, a new bridge over theMississippi River connectingLong Beach with Gulfport became operational providing transportation within Jackson County for people living near Gulfport or New Orleans. This bridge still operates today as part of State Road 527A (Jackson-Gulfport Highway). On December 2, 1911, Mayor Jens Christiansen announced that he would run for reelection against incumbent Mayor Harry Laughlin but failed to win re-election on November 3 due to opposition from Laughlin's supporters who boycotted the election campaign Independent candidate Averill Peebles won with almost 50% of the vote compared to Christiansen's 38%. After serving two terms as mayor, Christiansen retired from politics effective January 1st 1912 while Laughlin served out his unexpired term until he won re-election on November 3rd with more than 60% of the vote against opponent Ethel Wills Woods'. In 1916 Congressman James Kellar succeeded Christianityen as mayor and served until his death on February 28th 1919; Kellar had been elected mayor three times vacated by death or resignation prior to becoming congressman so he had six years total experience before becoming city magistrate effective March 1st 1919; Kellar also served as assistant municipal attorney during World War I which gave him some experience in law enforcement issues.
In 1871, the first white people arrived in what is now Long Beach, Mississippi. They were Methodist missionaries. The town was founded by them and named after a small creek that flowed through the area. The mission buildings still stand today.
