The city was named after General Arthur Laurens who fought in this battle as a Confederate general. In 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House with over 1,500 men including 300 from Laurel killed or wounded during his ill-fated attempt to cross the Potomac River into Virginia before daylight on April 9th 1865; this action sealed Lee's fate as a Confederate general and ended any hope of achieving victory against Ulysses S Grant at Appomattox Court House).
