Laurel was founded by European Americans in 1851 as a landing for slaves on the Yazoo River. In 1864, General Andrew Johnson captured and destroyed Fort Pillow on the Yazoo River, which led to an almost three-year slave war between white Confederate soldiers and Union troops. The Battle of Laurel won for the Confederacy and cut off Union access to food supplies that allowed Lincoln to win reelection without being impeached. The city was named after General Arthur Laurens who fought in this battle as a Confederate general. In 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House with over 1,500 men including 300 from Laurel killed or wounded during his ill-fated attempt to cross the Potomac River into Virginia before daylight on April 9th 1865; this action sealed Lee's fate as a Confederate general and ended any hope of achieving victory against Ulysses S Grant at Appomattox Court House). In 1870, Meridian became capital of Mississippi while Laurel served as its second capital until it moved toJacksonville in 1907 when that city became Mississippi's third capital following Oxford and Starkville respectively.
