The history of the navy in Laurel, Mississippi goes back to 1836. The first naval vessel in that town was the brig USS Hiawatha. It was used as a local guard while the town built its own fleet of sailing vessels. In 1848, the city of Laurel purchased two steam-powered warships from Baltimore and placed them in service within its harbor. In 1861, during the American Civil War, USS Constitution sailed into Laurel's harbor for what would be her last time. The ship had been converted into a training vessel for Confederate sailors and was moored there until February 1865 when she sailed back out to sea after providing cover for Confederate ships at Shiloh Peninsula. After the war ended, Constitution was decommissioned and stored at Norfolk Naval Yard until 1903 when she was sold to a private party and renamed SS John F Kennedy. She served until being scrapped in 1961. As mentioned earlier, USS Hiawatha served as a local guard while townspeople built their own fleet of sailing vessels over time; this led to a secondfleet being created in 1848 which later became known as CSS Alabama (the hull being acquired by Nashville Navy Yard). In 1861, USS Constitution sailed into Laurel's harbor once again on what would be her final visit; this event marked one of many significant milestones associated with that port during that period. After serving as a training vessel for Confederate sailors off of Shiloh Peninsula before finally departing for Norfolk Naval Yard where she eventually arrived broken down and scrapped in 1961 - alluding to how much more money might have been available if not for World War II!

Laurel is a town located in Jackson County, Mississippi. The population was 5,887 at the 2010 census. Laurel is the county seat of Jackson County. It was founded in 1836 by General James Wilkinson and named for Bathsheba Hall, wife of Colonel John H. Hall. The first post office in Laurel was established in 1838 and remained open until it closed in 1865. In 1841, General Wilkinson built a sawmill on the millponds near today's town center. The following year, he erected a gristmill on the same site. When the railroad arrived to Laurel in 1854, general Wilkinson donated land to create what is now downtown Laurel. The first store opened in 1860 and soon thereafter began to grow into an important commercial center with a large mercantile district that included several stores and two banks. Despite its growth as a commercial center, Laurell did not escape the local rotation of violence that characterized much of Mississippi during the antebellum period. A series of vicious massacres took place throughout central Mississippi between1835 and 1840 which left many southeastern African Americans dead or displaced permanently - one such event became known as "The Greenville Massacre". Ultimately however, Laurentia's successful economic development led to her incorporation as a municipality within Jackson County ceding little ground toLaurel's burgeoning city status quo
Laurel, Mississippi was founded in 1836 by Captain John C. Fenton and his wife, Sarah. The town became a important stop on the wagon trail between Memphis and Jackson. The first black person to live in Laurel was Solomon Northup, who moved from Tennessee in 1839.
