In 1978, the Marines moved their headquarters from Quantico, Virginia to Naval Air Station Meridian. Laurel is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Laurel was founded on a bluff overlooking the Yazoo River in 1819 by Capt. John Fenton and his wife, Lucy Patton. It became a post office in 1825. The town was destroyed by fire in 1865 and re-established as a settlement near the riverbank. The community name derived from an oldermississippian word meaning "a place of shelters." The first white person to live in Laurel was Captain John Fenton, who arrived with his family from Virginia in 1819. He built himself a cabin on the bluff overlooking the Yazoo River and named it Laurel after his mother's home state of Maryland. In 1830, he married Lucy Patton and began to trade goods with nearby Mobile Bayou for food and supplies that he transported overland to Jacksonville Landing on the Alabama River where he sold goods until he could ship back to Virginia with more than 350 pounds (190 kg) of rice per wagonload. Congress authorized him to settle land east of Mobile Bayou for 400 acres (160 ha), which he donated to local citizens as part of their government lands program known as Indian removal policy during the 1830s–40s period following European exploration of North America west of the Appalachian Mountains. In 1825, James Witherspoon moved into what is now Laurel after purchasing 640 acres (270 hectares) along Mobile Bayou from Captain Fenton for $5 per acre ($0.20/ha). Witherspoon had come across traders transporting cotton southward through this area generally headed towards New Orleans or Mexico City—a process that took weeks or even months due to heavy traffic congestion on Ulysses S., then newly created Constitution Lake—and decided that this area would be ideal for cotton plantations because it offered easy access to water resources and good planting soil quality with lower levels of natural pests like aphids and termites needed for successful growth within short distances around most major rivers systems essential for cotton production…Witherspoon also saw potential here for developing other agricultural products such as cornmeal, flour, sugar cane ethanol fuel oilseed rape (for cattle feed), lumber and tobacco products if feasible locations were found nearer waterwayside sites where those crops could be grown inland from standing water deposits….This land purchase marked one important turning point in Jackson County’s history; prior thereto it had been largely rural farming Rooney Township off I-10 just outside Jacksonville which had been established about 1800 by General Andrew Johnson’s forces during Indian Removal proceedings following Creek War settlements near present day Marshalltown…..At its peak early 1800′s Rooney Township contained some 6500 inhabitants making it one of largest county seats eastof Arkansas….By 1830 approximately 2500 inhabitants lived within 2 miles (3 km) radius surrounding present day Laurel including 2000 residents living inside current city limits along Mobile Bayou…………..Today there are only remnant housing units remaining scattered throughout town center areas visible only when walking down streets recent damage has caused mostly trees have been removed leaving open areas prone again* Captain John Fenton soon realized that greater profits could be made selling goods directly to American agents based out of Pensacola Street Station on Florida's Gulf Coast instead of shipping them all overland via Mobile Bayou like many others doing at this time……Fenton may have lost ownership but forever changed Jackson County when legislation authorizing West Point Settlement allowed 500 additional acres adjacent today's Meridian National Laboratory site eastof US 90 between US Hwy 61 & Meridian St which became known colloquially as "Fentons Bottom"…." By 1860 almost 16% ($2700/acre) Total Rural Household Landownership had increased compared [to 1840]….. Laurel, Mississippi was founded on December 1, 1810 by Jameson Caldwell and his brothers. The first post office in the community was established in 1814. Laurel, then known as Caldwellsborough, was located on the east bank of the Pearl River. In 1865, the town became a county seat and was renamed Laurelville after John Fenton Laurel, a U.S. senator from Alabama who had served in Congress during the mid-19th century. The population of Laurelville grew to over 7,000 by 1900; however, it declined due to factors such as disease and heavy industry during the early 21st century.
