Laurel, Mississippi is a small town located in the southern half of the state of Mississippi. The population was 5,421 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1847 by General George Washington Wilkinson and his wife Sarah. Wilkinson named it after Laurel Hill, a hill in Maryland that he had seen from his home on Antietam Creek. Laurel is a town in Hancock County, Mississippi. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to set foot in what is now Laurel was a French Jesuit missionary named Father Silvius Braga who visited the area in 1699. He named it for Saint Laurent (later Laurens) of Rome. It wasn't until 1827 that General Andrew Jackson and his army arrived in what is now Hancock County and began construction on the Mound House National Monument. In 1838, President James K. Polk added Laurel to Mississippi Territory as part of thewestern boundary of West Virginia which had been organized from parts of Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Oklahoma following Mexican-American War (1846-48). In 1850 Laurel was platted by Elijah Boudinot and others as "Laurel Township", after Hernando de Soto's exploration of the Mobile River Valley in 1540-41 led by his brother Francisco de Soto Iñiguez y Gómez. On July 4th 1870 when Union troops burned Meridian they burned also all but one house within blocks east of where present day US Route 81 intersects with US Route 99 just north of downtown Laurel vernacularly called Mount Olivet Hill because an early settler there named John Bowers built a summer home thereabouts during 1830s while he lived on a plantation near Greenville (now Clarksburg). A local sign still stands today at that intersection commemorating that event: "This road here became known as Mount Olivet Hill." By 1880 only 5% or so had remained within present day Laurel limits; hereinafter most residents were forced to leave for various reasons much like those faced by most pioneer settlements throughout west Tennessee: malaria pandemic [1865], secessionist sentiment [1868], lack of timber resources needed to support growing populations [1910s-1920s], incorporation into surrounding communities after statehood [1933],ceeding agricultural production thereby reducing available land for new settlers/ ranchers/farmers etc., etcetera... By 1930 only 6 businesses remain open - one general store (owned by black couple), two restaurants (both closed since 1990), two small shops catering primarily to hunters/fishers & farmers market customers; three churches - First Baptist Church (founded 1865), Second Methodist Church (founded 1885), Third Presbyterian Church - oldest extant church in Gulfport vernacularly called Zion Chapel because it served as headquarters for African Americans working on plantations before integrated schools were established nearby during late 19th century Reconstruction period; 12 cotton ginners - twelve families operated more than seventy cotton gins productsively from pre-World War II through post World War II years off OF Highway 95 between Meridian & Gulfport until approximately 1976 when all facilities were closed due notables such as father Bob Dardenough closing mill May 10th 1976 having owned property subject thereto for over 60 years & being involved with community life (& its demise) included many meetings historic& recent public events taking place on or nearOF 95 between Meridian & Gulfport including several major hurricanes Katrina hit August 29th 2005 Hurricane Rita hit October 25th 2005 both events resultin' significant loss or destructionof property closeto highway 95 including numerous homes destroyed or damage total estimated lost value exceeding $100 million
