They arrived in France on May 2, 1917 and were mustered out of service on June 9, 1917.
Laurel, Mississippi is a small town in the southeastern United States. It is population of around 9,000 people and lies on the border of Alabama and Illinois. The area was first settled by Paleo-Indians in the early 1800s. The first white settlers arrived in 1819 when Memphis entrepreneur James Vannigham bought land near Laurel for $2 per acre. Vannigham named his new community after his wife, Laurence (née Fenton). In 1824, he built a cotton gin and mill here. By 1830, the town had a store, schoolhouse and a few homes. A post office was established in 1831 and by 1840 it had 12 residents. The railroad came to Laurel in 1869 and soon started transporting goods from Chicago to Mobile Bayou through Laurel. By 1890, there were 10 businesses in town with a total payroll of $6 million annually. The mills closed in the 1920s but some remain standing today including the Vannigham Cotton Gin which is now operated as an agricultural museum. Today, Laurel is home to a large number of African Americans who continue to make up its majority population; however, there are also sizeable numbers of white residents as well as some Hispanic immigrants. The economy has been struggling since Katrina struck New Orleans three years ago; however, recent investment by local companies has given hope that things will improve soon enough.
