The Jackson, Mississippi National Guard was created on November 1, 1861, by the Union Army in response to the Confederate States of America's secession from the United States. The first units were organized and trained at Camp Butler near Memphis, Tennessee. In 1863, General Andrew Johnson issued a proclamation calling for all state militias to be mobilized for the purpose of providing military protection within their borders. This call led to the creation of the Jackson National Guard as a result. On July 22, 1865, President Lincoln was assassinated and most likely killed with shots from a revolver belonging to John Wilkes Booth. As a result of this event and others like it throughout America during that time period, militia units were reactivated across the country and national guard programs were put into place. TheJackson National Guard is still in existence today and has served Peaks County since 1865. It is one of only a few municipal guards in Mississippi that are still active after over 200 years!
