The Jackson, Mississippi military gift history can be traced back to 1861 when Confederate forces invaded the state. A few months later, on April 9th, 1861, General Robert E. Lee ordered the creation of a regiment called the "Jackson Rifles." The regiment was made up of soldiers who had deserted their units in Virginia and were needed in Mississippi to fight for the Confederacy. The regiment arrived in Jackson on May 2nd and was officially organized on that date. On November 1st, 1861, Confederate General Braxton Bragg delivered an address at Central College near Jackson. In his speech, he announced that a new army would be created called the Tennessee Volunteers and asked for donations of weapons and clothing from citizens of Jackson. Within days, stores were filled with donated items including rifles, cannons and uniforms. On December 6th, 1861, General Bragg issued a proclamation calling for individuals to contribute money or arms to the Confederate cause. By January 12th 1862, donations had reached $50000! In February 1862, General Braxton Bragg ordered Captain John Sabin to Commandeer arms from citizens in Jackson. Captain Sabin managed to confiscate many firearms from local residents but he also received some very valuable items such as artillery pieces and munitions. By March 1862, Captain Sabin's confiscated inventory totaled over 100 cannons and thousands of rounds of ammunition! In addition toCaptain Sabin's seizures,. others involved throughout Early Arkansas helped contribute weaponry and supplies to Confederate forces in Mississippi during this time period including Colonel James Mclntyre commanding militia detachment No 3rd Regiment Arkansas Infantry (Cavalry) stationed at Tupelo; Major-General Nathan Bedford Forrest's cavalry detachment F Troop 4th Regiment Kentucky Infantry (Cavalry) stationed at Corinth; Brigadier General Joel Chandler Harris' brigade occupied at Bayou Road arsenal; Lieutenant Colonel Alfred Hines commanding Second Missouri Volunteer Cavalry Regiment located at Starkville; Private First Class George Waddell commanding Company K Independent Louisiana Infantry Regiment stationed at Enterprise Barracks.(1) On April 15th 1862 Union troops under Lieutenant Colonel David Herold attacked a Rebel encampment near Vicksburg Michigan Territory boundary line between Union & Confederate States Army without provocation or warning leading to what is known as Battle of Vicksburg . Many important people were killed or wounded during this event including Brigadier General Jesse Richardson along with 5500 Rebels lost out if total fatalities numbering about 3300rectors etc...(2) The loss of life could have been much worse if not for Caucasian troops led by LtCol David Herold who showed great gallantry by saving many lives despite being outnumbered 3-to-1 by Southern Forces
