Jackson, Mississippi is a town in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 21,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hinds County. Jackson is located on the Gulf of Mexico about 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Hattiesburg and about 20 miles (31 km) northeast of Meridian. The first Europeans to visit Jackson were French traders in 1699-1700. The first permanent settler in what is now Hinds County was John Wilkinson in 1784. In 1812, General Andrew Jackson moved his family from Tennessee to this area and began the process of creating a new Northwest Territory by occupying what are now northern Alabama and Mississippi. When he was elected president in 1824, he decided to create a new territory including all of present-day Hinds County as well as parts of Coffee and Lowndes counties in Alabama and Mobile Bayous in Louisiana. The original boundaries for Jackson were 9 square miles (23 km²). Jackson quickly became an important center for trade with its location on the Pearl River delta making it a natural hub for transportation throughout much of Southeast Asia during the late 19th century and early 20th century. In 1918Jackson became one of fourteen American cities to participate in World War I when America entered into an alliance with Great Britain against Germany. During World War II, Jackson played an important role as a supply base for Army troops fighting in Europe while also providing services such as water supplies and housing to military personnel stationed there. After the war ended, many businesses closed down due to economic recession caused by changes brought about by inflationary forces which hit southern Mississippi particularly hard during that time period

Jackson, Mississippi is a town in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 6,008 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city and county seat of Jackson County. The name "Jackson" comes from General Andrew Jackson's home state of Georgia. The site of present-day Jackson was first inhabited by the Natchez people in pre-historic times. The area now known as Jackson was part of the Creek Nation before European contact. The U.S. federal government bought much of what is now Jackson County from the Creek nation in 1818 for $3 million dollars to promote white settlement in the area; this purchase made Jackson one of America's earliest counties and also gave it its name, which means "land where no man has dwelt." In 1821, a group of farmers organized as the nucleus of what would become the city ofJackson founded an agricultural society they called "The Greenville Society". This group purchased 640 acres (2 km²) east and west of downtown from John Kirby for $10 per acre ($/ha). They built seven houses on this land: three on Main Street and four on Summit Avenue (now East Boulevard). In 1825, they increased their holdings by purchasing 375 acres (14 km²) southeast along West Meridian Street from John Kirby for $25 per acre ($/ha). They constructed 20 houses there: six on West Meridian Street and twelve on Ridge Road (now North Boulevard).They sold these lots to other settlers who marketed them as horse or cotton farms with high prices because purchasers had to build roads leading into town so that others could find them. By 1830, over 100 families lived in downtown Jacksonville while 400 farming households were scattered throughout rural areas around the county periphery.
