The United States Air Force deployed a gift to Jackson, Mississippi in 1996. The air force gifted two McDonnell Douglas MD-11C jets to the city as part of Operation Golden Globe. The jets were used for promotional purposes and remained in Jackson until 2001 when they were donated to the University of Mississippi for use as a research aircraft.

Jackson, Mississippi is a city in the U.S. state of Mississippi and the capital of Jackson County. With a population of approximately 134,000 as of 2010, it is the largest city in Jackson County and one of the fastest-growing cities in America. Jackson is also home to six colleges and universities: The University of Southern Mississippi (USM), Mississippi State University– Natchez (MSU-Natchez), Tulane University, Centenary College, and Delta State Teachers College. The site where Jackson now stands was first settled by Paleo-Indians in 740 AD. In 1819, Englishman John Crouch surveyed the area and named it after James K. Polk, then United States President under Andrew Johnson. In 1832, General Andrew Jackson was elected president on a platform that called for Indian removal from what he considered to be their ancestral land within present-day Mississippi. His policies led to increased violence between whites and Indians throughout his term as president; this was inflamed by the Panic of 1873 which caused great economic hardship for many Mississippians including Jackson’s own family businesses. After leaving office in 1877, he resumed his campaign against Indian Removal but died before completing his goal. In 1898, white men started construction on the Hindenburg Bridge over Pearl River just east of present day downtown Jacksonville; however no one realized that they were building an airship until May 3rd when a balloon leak revealed their mistake when it ascended into the sky above town at night! On July 9th 1909 an attempt was made to fly past Jacksonville from Pensacola Florida using two Army balloons – although both failed due to bad weather conditions overland – thus proving once again that aviation could still be accomplished even during some very difficult times! A few years later on December 16th 1913 Scott Field Airport opened east side with runways parallel to Meridian Street making it possible for large airplanes such as Douglas DC-3s (the world's first jet airliner) landing there without fear of interference from either buildings or people on both sides of the road!
