There has been coffee brewing in Indianola, Mississippi since 1859. The first coffee house was opened on the corner of Second and State streets by Amos Butler and his brother-in-law, Nathan Cook. In 1865, Elijah White opened a small grocery store on the same site and began to sell coffee. By 1869, three buildings had been erected on the square - one for a drugstore, one for a bakery, and one for a coffeehouse. In 1892, John Waddell started bringing fresh beans from Indonesia to Indianola for sale. In 1915, Hilda Jorgensen established her own business making creams and syrups out of coffee beans. In 1951, Stonington Coffee Company was founded with operations located at 206 North Fifth Street in downtown Indianola. This company served as the anchor tenant until 1984 when it moved to its current location at 801 E 5th Street in Indianola.

Indianola, Mississippi is a city in Hinds County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 3,827 at the 2010 census. The area of the city was 9 square miles (22 km2). It occupies much of the eastern half of Hinds County and most of its western side. The first European to sight the mouth of the Missisippi River was Captain James Cook on his second voyage in 1779. He named it "Hinds" after one of his ship's crewmen who assisted him in this discovery. In 1802, General Andrew Jackson moved his army from Tupelo to central Mississippi and established Fort Jackson here. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Union forces burned down part of Indianola as part of their scorched earth policy against Confederate strongholds throughout southern Mississippi. This destroyed many homes and businesses within the limits of what is now Indianola City Limits today; however most residents were able to rebuild quickly and continue their lives outside those boundaries for many years following that event. In 1960, Indianola became a city when it incorporated as a result of a referendum vote by its citizens. At that time it had an population under 1,000 people and included only a few neighborhoods around downtown with any real commerce or industry other than small farmers markets selling produce from their gardens or picking berries near their homes year-round. Today's rendition has made significant strides since then with plans underway to develop downtown into an urban center with new restaurants, office buildings/residential complexes as well as extensive infrastructure improvements such as streetlights and public transportation expansion including bike lanes and pedestrian crossings at every intersection visible from Interstate 20 which bisects town limits just east of downtown - making it one stoplight away from Memphis across town! It is not often that an entire township, village, or town in Mississippi falls within the bounds of one university. Indianola was no exception. The community developed around a small agricultural society on the banks of the Yazoo River in what is now Indianola County. By 1825, Indianola had a population of about eighty people and two stores. The first school in Indianola was built in 1828 and opened to students from surrounding townships. In 1838, the first courthouse was erected in Indianola and served as a court house until it was destroyed by fire in 1865. Indianola has been home to several universities since its establishment as a community: Jackson State University (1872-1974), Mississippi Valley College (1914-1975), and Southern Illinois University Carbondale (1980-1999). The current campus of Southern Illinois University Carbondale spans over sixteen acres and includes three buildings—the Hockaday Center for Learning, Hailey Library/Student Services, and the Morrison School of Business Administration—that were all constructed between 1980 and 1998. Since 2000, Southern Illinois University Carbondale has also been home to the Kapp Research Institute, which specializes in researching contemporary African American culture and history. Today, Indianola is known for its annual corn festival which features live music and dancing along with various food items available for purchase from local vendors

Indianola, Mississippi was first settled in 1836 by a group of Cherokee Indians. The town was named for the Cornish immigrants who had come to the area in that year. In 1857, the United States acquired the land surrounding what is now Indianola from Britain as part of the Treaty of Paris after the American Civil War. The town started to grow rapidly and by 1870, it had a population of over 500 people. By 1902, Indianola had become an important railroad center with several lines passing through it.
