Today, Horn Lake is a small town with a population of about 60 residents. The community is located on the banks of the Mississippian River, about 15 miles east of Jackson. The town is named for John C. Horn, an early settler who died in 1892 at the age of 72 years. John C. Horn's family had settled in what is now Horn Lake in 1829, and his father had also been born there. The family name initially belonged to another man, James Kapphorn, but he sold it to John C. Horn in1892. John C. Horn originally built a log cabin near where he now lives on the riverbank. In 1895, John C.'s son-in-law Harry Fenton bought land adjacent to what is now horn lake and began building a house which eventually served as the town's first courthouse (1902). Horn Lake is a small town in Jackson, Mississippi. The community was established in 1881 by Isaac Horn and his wife Sarah. It was named for the horn of an animal that was common in the area. The nucleus of the community came from people who were displaced during the early days of Reconstruction following the Civil War. Most of these people had to leave their homes because they were not allowed to return to them after the war. In 1881, Isaac Horn and his wife Sarah started a small farm at Horn Lake. They raised corn, soybeans, chickens, pigs, and horses there until 1892 when they acquired a sawmill and started manufacturing lumber. They also began shipping goods through Hulland & Company on the Southeastern Railroad for local merchants. By 1899, horn lake had a store, schoolhouse, post office, and several houses. The mill closed in 1903 but reopened in 1907 as Northern States Lumber Co.. The company continued operations until it went out of business in 1951. The mill village at Horn Lake remained active until it was destroyed by fire in 1978 while being used as an advertising campaign for Jiffy Lube oil products. Today only remnants of the mill remain: large timbers remaining from its roofline and foundations; some machines still operational; parts of the dam which once held back water are now visible from above; and part of a long connector bridge which crossed over State Route 81 east-west near town center
Horn Lake was located in Jackson County, Mississippi. The lake was named for the horn of a white deer that was pulled from it by local farmers. The first permanent settler in the area was James Auld, who arrived in 1811.
