Horn Lake is located in Jackson, Mississippi, and was initially created as a result of the construction of the Yazoo River Bridge. Whitefish Bay served as the primary storage facility for water resources in Jackson until 1978 when it became part of the Jackson Water Pollution Control District. The third reservoir at Horn Lake was constructed in 1957 and it became known as Big Muddy Pond. Big Muddy Pond served as the primary storage facility for water resources until 2003 when it became part of the Jackson County Water Authority. In 2006, Big Muddy Pond also lost its secondary function due to increased levels of phosphorus which caused various plants to go out of business or be removed from use altogether. As a result of these changes, Big Muddy Pond has been mothballed since 2006. The history of Horn Lake, Mississippi begins with the arrival of white settlers in the area in 1837. The first permanent settler was John A. Richardson, who built a cabin on the current site of Horn Lake in 1838. The next year, Richardson and his family moved to what is now eastern Mississippi and started a small farm there. In 1840, Richardson married Jane Lyon and they decided to move to what is now central Mississippi. They founded a small town named for themselves called Richardsonville on the banks of the Yazoo River. Over time, other pioneer families bought land around Richardsonville and began growing crops and raising livestock. By 1870, the town had grown to over 1,000 people and it became an important transportation hub for goods across central Mississippi. In addition,Richardsonville enjoyed some success as a commercial center with its own grocery store, post office, bank and railroads. However, by 1930s Richardsonville had declined markedly as most of its residents relocated or left for better opportunities in larger towns or counties outside of central Mississippi.
