In the early 1800s, Horn Lake was a small farming community in Mississippi. The town was founded by German immigrants and their families. They started a grocery store and other businesses. The first coffee shop in Horn Lake opened in 1851. It was called the Dutchman's Coffee House. The first coffee beans were brought overland from Brazil in 1854. By 1860, Horn Lake had two coffee shops, one run by Germans and one run by Americans. In 1865, the town had four stores and twenty-four residents. In 1872, the first paper mill was built in Horn Lake. It produced flour for local mills and also exported wheat to England and France. By 1907, the mill had been replaced by a more modern plant that produced paper products such as cardboard and insulation for buildings. In 1916, the town became known as "Coffeeland" after its first coffee shop opened there that year with twelve employees serving sixty-eight customers daily! That same year saw the opening ofa new store on Pine Street called "The Coffee House". In 1922, "The Coffee House" closed its doors after thirty years of business operation! In 1937, when it merged with another local business called The Gourmet Shop (later renamed simply The Store) to form what is now known as Gourmet Coffee Company Inc., Horn Lake had become an important center for coffee production in Mississippi!
Horn Lake is a small town in central Mississippi, located on the banks of theouchie River. The community was founded in 1892 by two Methodists, John and sterea Horn. The settlement was named after an incident that took place in 1848. A group of men from neighboring Meridian were fishing in the river when they ran into conflict with a group of local Native Americans. One man, Samuel Treadwell, started to fight the natives while others defended him. As a result, one man became known as "The Warrior" and his band began to terrorize the residents of nearby towns. In response to this event, John Horn decided to name his new community after one of his colleagues from work at Meridian who had died in an accident while fishing: Samuel Treadwell Jr. Horn Lake has been home to many businesses over the years including a grocery store, bank, lumberyard and several churches. It also served as a training ground for military forces during World War II. After the war ended, most of the businesses closed down but some continued operates until today including Tyson's Pizza and JB Hi-Fi Radio Service

The post-war years were difficult for horn lake; most residents left for better opportunities in nearby Biloxi or Vicksburg following Reconstruction After World War II local businesses thrived as various industries developed aroundtown: Shipbuilding became perhaps Mississippians mostsignificant industry post-war (Freedman 1985).
