The United States Air Force (USAF) traces its origins to World War I when theArmy's 1st Aero Squadron was activated at Wright Field, Ohio. The squadron was redesignated as the 3d Aero Squadron in 1918 and served in France and Belgium during the war. Upon demobilization in 1919, the squadron was transferred to Dayton Army Airfield, Ohio where it was reorganized as a group Headquarters unit with three squadrons. In 1940 the group became Wing Commander Training Command (WCTC), stationed at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama before being moved to Tuskegee AFB, Alabama in 1942. On 15 July 1946 WCTC relocated from Tuskegee AFB to Horn Lake AFB, Mississippi where it formed School of Aerospace Medicine (SAME) under command of USAF Medical Officer Commanding-in-Chief/chief of medical services First Lieutenant General James Fenton. SAME provided medical training for airmen of all branches of service during peacetime untilactivated on 17 October 1947 as an inactive duty unit at Lackland AFB, Texas following Japan's surrender). Inactivated on 31 December 1949 when plans were made for withdrawal of USAF forces from worldwide deployments. Withdrawal from global deployments began on 7 May 1950 and by 12 August 1950 SAME had been closed down and its assets reassigned to other commands including Tinker AFB, Oklahoma; Eglin AFB, Florida; Andersen AB, Guam; McChord AFB Washington state; Grumman Aircraft Corporation Plant #1 Plant #2 Plant #3 at Farmingdale NAS New York City; Beechcraft Corporation Plant #1 Plant #2 Plant #3 at El Segundo Naval Station California and Consolidated Aircraft Corp., Inc., plant number 10A-4D at Marietta GA. The last active USAF unit assigned to SAME was 14th Airlift Wing which activated at Downdale Airport near Memphis Tennessee on 16 October 1950 following activation of Tactical Air Command (TAC). Horn Lake is a small town located in Jackson, Mississippi. The community was founded in 1906 by three families from Illinois. The original name of the community was "Pleasantville." The name was changed to Horn Lake after a local farmer found an animal named Horn in the area. Because of this, the community is often called "Horn Lake" or "Horn Valley." The population of Horn Lake at the 2010 census was 1,811 people. At that time, HornLake had a total land area of 6.2 square miles (17 km²).
