Hernando is a town in Mississippi, United States. The population was 9,818 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jackson metropolitan area. It is named after Hernando de Soto, an explorer and conquistador who explored much of what is now Mississippi in the 16th century. The town was founded by members of the d'Iberville family in 1817 as a small station on the Yazoo River. They built a trading post and began to grow crops. In 1828, they became the first town in Mississippi to be incorporated as a village. They remained small until 1861 when they joined forces with other towns in what would become Jackson County to form the Jackson Territory. The townspeople were able to build a courthouse and jail, but it was destroyed by aerial bombardment during World War II. In 1974, Hernando became an unincorporated community within Jackson County again and has since continued to grow steadily with its own government - though it does not have any municipal services provided by Jackson County government - providing all services within its own borders through its elected officials: Mayor Roger Gentry (D), Town Councilmember Donnie Hall (R), School Boardmember Gayle Hiller (D) and Selectman Scott Pohlman (R). She ultimately collided with another ship while underway off Japan resulting in both ships being sunk[2]. In 1811, Hernando, Mississippi was founded after French fur traders discovered the area. The town was named for General Hernando de Soto, who explored and claimed the area in 1795. The made it a part of Spanish Louisiana during their colony's time. The town gradually grew as a result of its position on the Yazoo River and trade with nearby Arkansas and Illinois. In 1836, when the United States acquired Florida from Spain, Hernando became part of Mississippi Territory. Hernando experienced some major changes during the early 1800s due to large numbers of slaves being brought over from Africa. Slavery in America began to decline following the American Revolution but continued until 1865 when it was abolished nationally by President Abraham Lincoln. After emancipation in 1865, many freedmen moved into slave-based economies in what is now known as Jackson County and other parts of Mississippi. Many black Mississippians also migrated to northern states such as Pennsylvania and Wisconsin where they continued to work in agriculture until after World War II ended abruptly for most Americans. Today, remnants of slave quarters still stand along Highway 98 north of downtown Hernando which are open to visitors for tours every day from 9am-3pm during summer months or by appointment only during winter months (see website). Additionally, several businesses continue operations related to slavery including an auction house that still operates today; a plantation; a restaurant; two churches; three schools (including one high school); two historical markers; and more than 20 miles of hiking trails around town which offer excellent views of surrounding countryside
In 1815, the Spanish American War began when Hernando’s brother-in-law Don Carlos Manuel de la Cosa invaded Florida. The war ended in 1818 with Spain’s defeat and cession of Florida to the United States. In 1821, President James K. Polk offered Texas to Mexico as a result of the Mexican–American War. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo brought peace between America and Mexico and ended the war.
