The history of the National Guard in Hernando, Mississippi can be traced back to 1892. At that time, the town was known as a stop on the railroad between Mobile and Jackson. The need for a militia to protect local citizens became evident, and a group of citizens formed the First National Guard in 1892. Over time, the Militia has been augmented by volunteers from surrounding counties. In 1936, the Mississippi Legislature passed an act providing for statehood for Hinds County and creating the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office. This event marked an important change in how national guard service was conducted in Hinds County. Prior to this time, militia members were county-based and rotated through their respective sheriff’s departments on an annual basis. In 1940, it was decided that there would be no more rotating through our sheriff’s departments; instead we would become one unit with a single commander who would report directly to the Governor of Mississippi. This new organization would continue to exist until 1992 when it merged with another entity to form The Mississippi National Guard (MNG). Since its inception, The Mississippi National Guard has played an important role in protecting our state from harm both domestically and abroad. Units have served in many wars including World War II, Gulf War I & II, Hurricane Katrina natural disaster response efforts as well as Operation Iraqi Freedom and Afghanistan service deployments. Through these experiences, The Mississippi National Guard has developed strong relationships with various community organizations across our state which have helped make our communities stronger overall!
