The Hernando community was first established in 1892 when J.M. Richardson and his family arrived from Illinois on horseback to homestead land that he had purchased near present-day Meridianville. The community grew rapidly due to the production of cotton and other crops by local farmers and their families. By 1915, Hernando had become an important stop on the Yazoo River Railroad and boasted a post office, Baptist church, schoolhouse, store, livery stable and several homes. In 1922, a new courthouse was built in memory of Judge John Prentice Ballard who had been killed in an automobile accident two years earlier while serving as circuit judge for Hancock County. In 1940 (just after World War II ended), Hernando experienced its most dramatic transformation when it became the center of the largest cotton gin production area in Mississippi. The Works Progress Administration (WPA) constructed three large cotton gins here - one each at Rogers & Jenkinson's mill and at Wirtz & Vance's sawmill - which helped make Hernando one of the most prosperous communities in central Mississippi during this time period. After World War II ended, many small businesses closed down because of changes in economic conditions; however, some locals continue to operate small businesses today through partnerships with regional corporations such as Gulf Coast Mills Inc., Delta Dredge Co., First National Bank and United Cotton Ginners Incorporated (UCIG). Hernando, Mississippi is a city in Butler County, Mississippi. The population was 11,811 at the 2010 census. The name is derived from Spanish and Portuguese missionaries who came to the area in the 18th century. Hernando means "the landfall." The town was founded by white settlers in 1836 on what had been part of French Louisiana before it was ceded to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase. The first people to live in what is now Hernando were Creekshawn and Aisles families who arrived in 1836. When they started farming, they did so on land that later became called Indianola Fields because Creek Indians lived there before being forced out by U.S. forces during the American Civil War. In 1865, white men from nearby Meridian began exploring a new land grant that would become known as Butler County and found Hernando on November 1, 1866 when they set up a post about three miles northeast of present-day downtown Hernando. They named their settlement for General Antonio Lopez de Cervecera y de la Vega y O'Leary (1812-1892), an officer with Santa Anna's Mexican army during Texas' revolt against Mexico some years earlier who had fled to Texas following its defeat at San Jacinto Battle. The first school was built in 1870 and served gradeschool through eighth grade until 1935 when it moved downriver to Meridian School and then back upriver again to open its doors at present day downtown Hernando where it remains today as one of the few public schools in Butler County In 1902, cotton ginning activity began here which led to development around town including brick buildings, a general store and two breweries which still stand today - Pabst Brewing Company (1902) and Third Street Brewery (1910).
