In Hernando, Mississippi, coffee has been a part of the community for over 100 years. The first mention of coffee in the community is from 1827, when a trader named John Gregg Travels to Hernando and makes contact with Chief Manuel Ponce de Leon. Gregg mentions that they have found beans growing in this area and offers to trade them for goods. Coffee was not grown commercially until the late 1800s, but it was brought over by white settlers who began to grow it as an ornamental crop. Coffee first began appearing on menus in the early 1900s in Hernando. At that time, there were only a few cafes and restaurants in town. One of the earliest cafe owners was Mrs. Jordon who opened her establishment at 5th and Market Streets in 1903. This establishment became known as “The Jordons” because Mrs. Jordan took care of all aspects of its operation- from serving coffee to making advertising flyers and managing finances. Over time, many different businesses moved into downtown Hernando including several clothing stores, banks, grocery stores, movie theaters, and more! In 1963, The Coca Cola Company built their first bottling plant here – resulting in significant growth for the town! Since then, coffee has also become an important part of local culture with many people referring to themselves as “coffee people” or simply “Coffeepians”!

Coffee is a drink that has been enjoyed by people for centuries. The first coffee beans were roasted in the ancient city of Constantinople, which is now Istanbul, Turkey. Coffee was also roast in Africa and India before it reached America. The first coffee plantations were established in Brazil and Argentina. In 1795, Dutchman Hendrik Brouwer introduced the first modern espresso machine to Europe. Today, coffee consumption around the world is estimated at over two billion cups per day. The quality of coffee can be determined by its bean size, roast type, grind level, water temperature and brewing method used. Different beans produce different flavors and qualities of coffee. There are two main types of beans- Arabica and Robusta- which are grown in different parts of the world. Arabica beans are considered to be finer-grained while Robusta beans are considered to have a higher caffeine content. When it comes to flavor, all coffees vary slightly from one another even though they may look very similar on the surface due to their raw materials (beans). There are multiple coffee histories in Hernando, Mississippi. The first recorded coffee from the area was in 1795 when a man by the name of John Cook landed on this coast and started trading with Native Americans. Some think that the beans may have come from Ethiopia or Yemen. In 1867, a group of men led by General Nathan Bedford Forrest established a plantation near what is now Mount Pleasant. They brought over all sorts of crops and animals to their new land, including coffee trees. Coffee production began to grow rapidly, and soon it became an important part of the community’s economy. In 1912, Hernando voters passed a town charter that granted them city status. This allowed for more development in the town and helped it become one of the most vibrant communities on Florida’s Gulf Coast. Coffee continued to be an important part of Hernando's economy until around 1960 when Prohibition ended. Many small businesses were unable to compete with larger breweries who could buy cheaper beans and sell them at a higher price point throughout America. Coffee production resumed after Prohibition but was greatly reduced due to cost-cutting measures by grocery stores and manufacturing companies alike. However, some farmers still continue to produce high quality Ethiopian or Yemeni coffee today under limited conditions outside of Africa (usually in developing countries).

In 1805, when Hernando County was organized, its present boundaries were set. The county's center was located at the mouth of the Mississippi River and it extended eastward to include all of what is now St. Clair County and westward to include much of modern-day Monroe County. The land that makes up Hernando County has been inhabited by Native Americans for more than 10,000 years. One group that lived in this area during the early 1800s were the Mississippians. The Mississippians were a culture that lived in what is now Mississippi and Louisiana before migrating to central America in the 1500s. After arriving in central America, the Mississippian people divided into two groups: the East Choctaws and West Choctaws. These groups began their lives as hunter-gatherers but eventually became farmers due to their new environment. After becoming farmers, the Mississippians developed a system of government which included elections and a chief executive officer. During this time period, there were many battles fought between Native American groups and European settlers. One battle that occurred in 1805 was known as the Battle of Mound Bayou. This battle resulted in several Europeans killed and several Native Americans captured including Chief Pontotoc who later died at an unknown location while being held captive by white settlers

In 1814, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto set out from Cuba on what would become the first successful European exploration of the Mississippi River. His mission was to find a new route to India by way of the California Coast. After spending a year exploring and mapping the river, he returned to Spain in May 1815 with reports that led to King Ferdinand VII ordering an expedition downriver in order to explore and map more of the area. On July 1, 1816, thirty-six men made their way downriver and finally reached Spanish settlement at New Orleans two weeks later. They were met by Governor Claiborne Jackson and his military escort whoWelcome them warmly but skeptically asked for news of their find during their stay in Louisiana. The expedition's commander, Captain Manuel Isidro Lopez de Santa Anna, who had been sent along as interpreter, quickly realized that this was not just another group of traders looking for trade opportunities; rather, these Spaniards were determined to explore every inch of this vast new land they had discovered. Santa Anna ordered building supplies be brought upriver so that his troops could live off the land while he surveyed and mapped the region for potential fur-trade routes. The explorers soon realized that they were not alone in their quest for knowledge about this previously undiscovered continent; other groups showed interest in this area as well. In 1818, Lieutenant Colonel Francisco Javierez Pérez founded a small town called Biloxi on what is now Gulfport County near where New Orleans stands today. This community was established as part of an effort by Pérez to attract colonists from all over Spain who wanted access to this valuable resource – oil – located offshore on Mobile Bay. headquarters for both Biloxi and its related trading posts lay at Port Hudson on Lake Pontchartrain which would eventually become Baton Rouge (and then New Orleans). By 1830, Spanish settlers numbered over 6500 living around Baton Rouge alone while Frenchmen numbered over 10 thousand people living around New Orleans only five miles away! It should be noted that these early Hispanic entrepreneurs did not just start out selling goods or services; they also began developinganchesociety(later known as Hispanics) which served as social clubs/relief organizations providing housing, foodstuffs, schooling (including Flemish Protestant missionaries), medical care and even political leadership within colonial societies throughout South America when conditions allowed such activity...these relationships helped form what we know today as Hispanic American society."
