The Coast Guard Auxiliary in Hernando, Mississippi is a long and proud history. The Auxiliary was organized on December 12, 1921 as the Harbor Defense Unit No. 1, with the mission of “defending the Gulf of Mexico against submarine and air attack”. In 1984, the Auxiliary became known as the Coast Guard Service Foundation Incorporated (CGSF) to reflect its international reach. The organization has since grown to include more than 6,000 members throughout Mississippi and Alabama. The Auxiliary was founded on December 12th 1921 by Captains Clayton W. Howlett and James Ritchie Jr., both from Mobile County in Alabama. They were motivated by concerns about torpedoes being smuggled into the gulf through Banana River Pass between Florida and Mississippi Territory. The Port of Jacksonville had been using moorings at Menachie Island for storage purposes when they were approached by Captains Howlett and Ritchie with the idea of having a permanent harbor defense unit to protect Hernando Bay from submarines, planes, and other vessels trying to enter or exit the bay without permission from local authorities. Inaugurated on February 2nd 1922 under Captain John Ellington as Harbor Defense Unit No 1 it quickly became a popular auxiliary activity enjoyed by locals and visitors alike due to its cooperation with law enforcement agencies along with providing protection for citizens during times of emergency such as hurricanes or tidal waves! The First National Commander for this new unit was Captained Clifford Sauer who served until his retirement in 1951!
