Hattiesburg, Mississippi is a city in Jackson County, Mississippi, United States. The population was 12,426 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Jackson County. The city was founded by General James K. Polk in 1836 as a small community on the bluff overlooking the mouth of the Yazoo River. The first settler in Hattiesburg was John A. Wise and his family from Virginia arrived in 1837. In 1840, Rev. George Washington Hardin established an Episcopal church in what is now Hattiesburg and named it after himself. In 1844, General Ulysses S. Grant examined plans for a new federal town in central Mississippi and recommended that Hattiesburg be its commercial center and educational center; he also selected it as the temporary seat of government forJackson County until Memphis could be built or Stroudsburg developed east of town on NFL land (the site now known as National Mall). By 1850, over 30 businesses had opened within downtown boundaries of what became known as "Old Town." In 1868 Congress designated the area around present-day Hattiesburg as Jackson County's permanent seat via act of Congress No., 727; this included all present-day Jackson County except for part of northwestern Middle Tennessee which remained part of Knoxville County until 1796 when that county was created from parts of Davidson and Tyler counties along with other western Cumberland County Territory (now Kentucky) to form West Tennessee Territory pursuant to the Morrill Act Dec., 10th [1865]. On November 3rd 1870 local citizens wearing Confederate military uniforms attempted to violently suppress a Union picnic organized by local farmers to celebrate election results certified November 1st; about twenty were arrested but no one injured during what became known as "The Day The Confederacy Lost". By 1880 some 40% of all cotton production had been moved out westward across Texas into Arkansas following Reconstruction; however, cotton production resumed in eastern Mississippi due largely to slave labor brought there under contract fromAlabama landowners during Reconstruction – primarily those owned by planters who returned home after being pardoned by President Ulysses S. Grant following his successful prosecution of President Andrew Johnson for high treason – though some slaveholders did manage to keep their own slaves through purchase or sale prior to 1865 when slavery was abolished throughout most if not all American states save Missouri (see note below). Withdrawal from Missouri forced many Planter families relocated southward into Arkansas where they discovered new opportunities for agriculture while others continued operations northward into what is today Alabama (although much smaller than former southeastern Alabama), Georgia (which achieved statehood in 1889), orTexas according to one source while another claims they sold their land back north near Montgomery because “they didn’t want black people living next door”). In 1868, cotton farming gave way to sugarcane farming and since then much has changed about HattIESBURG'S HISTORY! For example; starting out life as just an agricultural community it has gone through so many changes that it can barely be remembered anymore... let alone documented properly! So much has happened here during these past 104 years that it would take volumes to really document everything... but we'll try our best!
